Division of Polynomials
Unit 10
2
Long Division A polynomial can be divided by a divisor of the form x - r by using long division. It is similar to long division of real numbers.

5
If a term is missing- You must write that term in order with a zero coefficient. For example:
6
Remainders: Sometimes a fraction does not divide evenly. Leave the remainder in a fraction form with the divisor.

8
Synthetic Division This is a shortened form of long division.
You do not write the variables. Write the coefficients in order from standard form. Put zeros if a term is missing. Write the r value to the left of the coefficients.
9
Drop down the first coefficient and multiply this by the r value.
Write this product below the next coefficient. Add these values and repeat the process. The numbers at the bottom become the coefficients of the answer. (Remember to decrease the exponent by 1.)
