6 So, What are Peer-Run Respites?
Peer-run respites are crisis alternatives with the intended outcome of diverting hospitalization They are staffed and operated by peers who have professional training in providing crisis support to build mutual, trusting relationships Peer run respites are usually located in a house in a residential neighborhood. They provide a safe, homelike environment for people to overcome crisis Laysha Ostrow, MPP, PhD candidate Lived Experience Research Network November 26, 2013

10 P.E.E.R.S for Hope House Our Mission is to be a safe space for mental health recovery, for peers and by peers, where everyone leaves with something to look forward to. Our Vision We believe that a short stay at the Peer Crisis Respite can fundamentally and positively change one’s mental health recovery trajectory. We are confident that as a survivor of mental illness experiences the hope and support that we can assist in nurturing then recovery, coping skills, and empowerment will be immensely enriched. We envision that the Peer Crisis Respite Program will be a valuable tool that individuals, families, and providers will strategically utilize to improve wellness, resiliency, and healing agility. We are not just an additional mental health program as we believe we are launching peer support and recovery-oriented care to a whole other level in our community. We intend to be an organizing force and leader to improve community mental health recovery by powerfully implementing recovery-oriented care principles and psychiatric rehabilitation practices.

32 Lessons Learned (cont.)
“As peer support in mental health proliferates, we must be mindful of our intention: social change. It is not about developing more effective services, but rather about creating dialogues that have influence on all of our understandings, conversations, and relationships.” --- Shery Mead, Founder of Intentional Peer Support (IPS)
