FICTION
A fiction book is made up or “pretend”. It is a story from the author’s imagination.
Harry Potter and the Order of the
Phoenix, is an example of a fiction
book written by J. K. Rowling.

2. NON-FICTION
Non-fiction often teaches you how to do things as well as providing details on a topic.
Non-fiction books, or Information books are not pretend or imaginary. They are about things that are real. They are about people, about places, about things – they can be history or geography, crafts, weather, sports, even science fair projects or dinosaurs.
ROCKS & MINERALS is an example of a
a non-fiction book. This is a science book
about earth science and geology.

3. REFERENCE BOOKS Examples of reference books are
A work (such as a dictionary or encyclopedia) containing useful facts or information.
Examples of reference books are
Almanacs, Dictionaries, Encyclopedias
Telephone & Address Guides, and
many more.

4. BIOGRAPHY This book is an account of the
A biography is the written history of a person’s life.
This book is an account of the
life of Martin Luther King, Jr.
It is written, composed, and
produced by another person.
(This particular book is a
“photobiography”.)

5. PERIODICAL
A publication issued at regular intervals of more than one day. Some periodicals are published every week, some every month, others every two months or even once or twice each year. They are produced regularly. You might think of them as “magazines”.
The purpose of popular periodicals
(sometimes called magazines) is to
entertain the reader, to sell products,
and/or to promote a viewpoint.

6. Call Numbers FICTION call number is made up of two parts:
A call number is like the book’s address in the library. It tells where the book lives in the library shelf.
FICTION call number is made up of two parts:
FIC – for Fiction
Full name of author’s last name
Example: FIC
ROWLING

7. NON-FICTION
A NON-FICTION call number for a mammal book by Jane Mosley would look like this:
First line is the Dewey Decimal Number: 599
Second line is the author’s last name: Mosley

8. BIOGRAPHY Biography call numbers are made up of two parts:

Second line is the subject’s last name: LINCOLN
