1 How to Find a Book in DMS Media Center

2 How to use Destiny (But first, what is it?)
Destiny is the online catalog that keeps records of all the books in the media center. You can access this program on your ipad or any computer. The computers in the library will already be opened to Destiny so there’s no need to log in. On your ipad, you can go to Safari and type in destiny.apsb.org and then log in, or you can go through the Destiny Quest App.

3 Finding a book If you know the title or author of the book you want to read, simply type it in the search bar when under the Catalog & Library Search tabs. The following screenshots show you examples of what you will likely see. Do the same for nonfiction except instead of a title or author, you’ll most likely type in a topic or category.

4 Notice the red arrows pointing to the tabs that should be open. The blue arrow shows where to type the title, author, or category. The section at the bottom allows you to adjust your search. This can typically stay as it is.

5 After doing a search for Insurgent, I got the results shown at the right. Notice the call Number – FIC ROT. “ROT” are the first three letters of the author’s last name. This is a hardcover book that would be found under “R” in the fiction section of the Media Center.

6 Paperback Books Paperback books are shelved differently than the hardcover and are in their own section. Paperback books are shelved alphabetically by the title of the book. Look at the next 2 slides and notice the difference between the call numbers of a hardcover fiction book and a paperback fiction book.

7 letter is it alphabetized?
*Refer to the next slide Entry 1 is hard-cover fiction. What does “Raw” represent? Entry 2 is paperback. How does its call number differ from the one for the first entry? Under what letter is it alphabetized? The 3rd entry shows that it is part of a class set which means those aren’t available for students to check out individually. Teachers can check those out to use with their classes.

To search for a nonfiction book, simply type in the topic. I did a search for Jennifer Lawrence. Notice the call number of the first entry. *Why does it start with a number? *Where in the media center would you find the book? *Why does the 3rd entry say it has Unlimited copies?

Books in a Series can be found along the short free-standing wall on the other side of the row of computers. Unfortunately, there currently is no indication in Destiny of whether or not a book is in this section. Eventually, we’ll add a note in Destiny next to the call number of books that are found here. Until then, if you can’t find a book in the paperback or hardcover sections, it may be part of a series which means it could be here. Don’t hesitate to ask if you have any questions!

When facing the Multipurpose Room – Nonfiction books are on the right side of the library starting near the door on the right with the clock above it. They continue down the wall and along the outside and inside of the last free-standing shelf. The signs on the top of each shelf should help you find the numbers your looking for. Nonfiction books are organized by the Dewey Decimal System. When you look up a book in Destiny and are given a call number that begins with numbers and ends with letters, you’ll know the book is nonfiction. Follow the numbers on the signs to find it. Let’s take a quick tour!
