1 Destination: The Library

2 Teacher Librarian: Ms. Claudia Pilon
I liked to pretend to read when I was 2 years old. I am very happy to be your Teacher Librarian.

3 The Basics We are open before school and after school (‘til 3:45). On PD Mondays and for some Tuesday meetings we might need to close right after school. You can use the library during class if your teacher gives you a pass. You can stop in at break and lunch. Yes, you can eat and drink in the library, just not when you are working on a computer (both desktop and laptop), and as long as you clean up after yourself.

4 When you arrive… Check out our Information Board in the entrance.
Grab a free book or magazine or some information that interests you. Check out our displays which change often. SIGN IN! Super important so we have data to show how the library is being used! If you visit during class time, give your pass to Ms. Pilon or a student library worker.

8 How do I find a book? You can use any computer with internet access!
Students> Library> Destiny Quest or Find a Book In Our Library

9 Okay, I found what I want on the computer, now what do I do?
Write down or print the Call Number(s) Think of the Call Number as the address of the book, where it lives on the shelf. Fiction is always FIC + 1st three letters of author’s last name Nonfiction is always a number+ 1st three letters of author’s last name Reference books are like nonfiction and they also say REF

10 If you are looking for fiction..
Fiction books start on the 3rd shelf from the windows, and continue along the west and south walls of the library and end on the shelves that jut into the middle of the library near the laptop computer cart. Kind of a loose circle of fiction around most of the perimeter of the library. They are alphabetized by author’s last name FIC+ 1st three letters of author’s last name

11 Fiction ≠ “fake” or “not true”; while that was ok in elementary or middle school…
…now, we must expand our thinking. Fiction is imaginative. Fiction, whether novels, short stories, plays and some poetry might not be entirely factual, or might be crazily nonfactual, but can still contain important truths. It can be realistic, unrealistic, futuristic, contemporary, historical, fantastical, based-on-a-true-story, speculative… *Just because something tells a story does not mean it is fiction. There is narrative non-fiction!

12 If you are looking for nonfiction…
Nonfiction books can be found on the numbered shelves that jut out into the main room. These books are organized using the Dewey Decimal System. Each book has a Call #: A number + the first 3 letters of the author’s last name (with the exception of the 921s) Reference Books are organized the same way, but are in there own area. They are generally not checked out, but exceptions are made. PLEASE ASK!

13 Nonfiction ≠ True (Well, not necessarily. It depends…)
Factual is a better word to use when describing nonfiction. (Although people argue about facts all the time.) Nonfiction can be informational or narrative (story). PERSPECTIVE and POINT OF VIEW are important! Two authors writing on the same topic could have wildly different perspectives, emphasize different aspects of a topic, and draw completely different conclusions.

14 Laptop Computer Cart Please handle with care.
When you are finished, please shut down COMPLETELY to prolong the life of the battery. Plug in carefully in the correct slot in the cart. Please do not wait until the last seconds of class to return your laptop.

15 Time to… Experience the library Dig deeper into the digital library
Search the catalog (or browse the shelves) Check out a book Explore the library web pages
