2 Today I will cover: A summary on what is taught in library lessons How the library suports the curriculum How to use our catalogue (Destiny) to locate books What is on the library blog and how it can help you and your child Our exciting new e book library Today I will not go into great detail about: research skills authors and book recommendations helping your child to read I have planned some further sessions on these topics and if you are interested please leave feedback at the end.

3 The library supports the curriculum
Events Roald Dahl Day Author talks Non Fiction November- new information book award Fiction February Book Week Book fairs and catalogues The Red Dot books and house competition Teachers Library classes Resources: digital and print Book displays to promote titles Book Bingo, book challenges On-line resources including Encyclopedia Britannica, First News, Tumblebooks and World Book Encyclopdia The school library supports the curriculum by selecting relevant books and reading specially chosen titles that link to class topics/ themes. We work closely with class teachers to find the appropriate print and digital resources.

4 What happens in library lessons?
The students have a lesson every week or every fortnight. The lessons are dedicated to: Introducing new authors, titles and genres Library skills: how to use the library effectively Research skills and information finding The next few slides will share briefly what the students are taught when they are inducted into the Junior School Library.

5 When can students use the Library?
Break/Snacktime Lunchtime Before and after school During lessons Parents are welcome to use the library before 9am and after 3:30 pm but are requested not to come in during lessons.

6 How many books can be borrowed?
Students: 2 English and 2 Mandarin books for two weeks Parents: 2 books for 2 weeks Books may be renewed, reserved and put on hold.

10 What can we use on the student portal?
We use lots of different links from the student portal What can we use on the student portal? How to access this at home: Go to the parent portal Click on learning Click on student portal

11 The Library Catalogue: Destiny
From the student portal or website below choose Junior School Library The Library Catalogue is the STARTING point for looking for books and information. We use in school and you can use this at home. It’s DESTINY. This is our database of books which you can use without logging on by choosing GUEST access Here is the Website address for using with a laptop The Library Catalogue

12 Finding Books for Your Child
The Library Catalogue: Destiny Finding Books for Your Child For young children we talk of searching for a title, author or simple subject – eg dogs or snakes (KEYWORDS) Ask your children to show you how they use Destiny. Username: firstname.surname Password: student ID omitting the first zeroes

Download the Destiny Quest app for free. Use guest access for quick searching or register with us so we can set up an account for you. If you are using on a tablet or smartphone you can downoad the DestinyQuest app for free. Displays slighly differently, but you Search in same way and place holds.

Book lists for recommended reading - Pinterest for books in school RED DOT / Exciting New DC Information Award/ Return to research skills DEMO Research Skills process that we would use in school and develops as we go further in school Concepts Questioning/Keywords/Factfinding and plagiarism/ Ownership and intellectual property/evaluating websites and books/ Resources using filters Difference between search engines and databases Go to the parent portal, then click library, then click Junior School Blog.
