New York 4/1/2019 Retail sale restrictions A3057A Commencing April 1, 2019, in order to be sold in the state of New York, smoke alarms, if battery operated, contain a nonreplaceable, nonremovable battery that is capable of powering the smoke alarm for a minimum of 10 years. Any inventory of replaceable battery smoke alarms purchased before April 1, 2019, will be allowed to be sold. Wireless devices are exempt from these requirements. Rules Pending Texas Houston Group I – Assisted living homes, etc. Houston IFC 2012 Amend-ments Requires CO alarms to be installed in accordance with NFPA 720 in all Group I occupancies (assisted living homes, day cares, hospitals, etc.) Group I & R – Apts., hotels, etc. City of Houston Fire Code Section For all Group I-1 (rehabilitation centers, group homes, etc.) and R dwellings (apartment buildings, hotels, motels, etc.), when a battery-operated single-station alarm is replaced, that smoke alarm shall be replaced with a tamper-resistant battery-operated single-station smoke alarm. Nothing shall require an owner to replace an operational battery-operated single-station smoke alarm.

Baltimore County 10/4/2017 Rental Properties Requires CO alarms in all rental dwellings having a fuel burning appliance or an attached garage. New Hampshire New SF & MF, Rentals, Hotels, Dorms All single-family dwellings, and newly constructed or renovated multifamily buildings. One CO alarm per level and in each common stairway and in each common hallway of a multi-unit dwelling. New York 2/23/2017 All SF & MF, Rentals, Hotels, Dorms Requires CO alarms to be installed in all new and existing one and two-family dwellings and multifamily dwellings, hotels, and dormitories having a fuel-burning appliance, system or attached garage North Carolina New SF & MF, Rentals (excluding vacation properties) Requires CO alarms to be installed outside of each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms in all newly constructed one and two-family dwellings and town homes not more than three stories and when work requiring a permit occurs in such existing dwelling. Oregon 7/1/2017 New SF & MF Requires CO alarms in all new residential dwellings having a fuel burning appliance or an attached garage. Penn-sylvania Tennessee 10/1/2017 Wisconsin 4/1/2017 Existing SF, Rentals, Hotels CO alarms are required in existing multi-family dwellings equipped with a fuel burning appliance or attached garage and shall be installed within 15 feet of each sleeping area.
