1 Mrs. Jones’ Weekly News January 4, 2013
Language Arts This week we have been working on our unit about Homes and Families. We have been concentrating on our Focus Questions: Who is part of a home? Ask your kiddo to tell you about the many different people that make up a home. Plus, we have been working on our Comprehension Strategies and how to use Context Clues when reading a vocabulary word. Letters for the Week: This week we worked on letters Aa, Hh, Tt, and Pp. We have learned how to print, make the sound, and identify words with these letters. We are practicing listening to where a particular sound falls in a word and used our “word dog” to help with the beginning, middle, and end sounds in words. Math This week in math we have continued on with our numbers to 31. We filled in a calendar on our own for the month of January. We have been working on skip counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s. Plus, we worked on our Estimation skills for groups of numbers. Please continue to practice identifying, writing, and counting sets of numbers up to 20 at home. Next week a family fun math review will come home and our projected math test will be on Friday, January 11th. Stay tuned for more details to follow. Reader’s Club We have been working on all kinds of stories about Families during our small group reading time. Ask your kiddo about the two books they read this week. All our books focused on our theme question: Who is part of a home? We also worked on our handwriting, sounds, letters, and reading skills during Reader’s Club time too. At the listening center we had a great new book called Tackylocks and the Three Bears…what was your kiddos favorite part? These activities will be continuing on for next week too (in case your kiddo didn’t get to hear the story this week) Reminders Monday, January 7 ~ Consonant Binders go home for the week Tuesday, January 8 ~ Math Homework goes home Friday, January 11 ~ Consonant Binders are Due! Math Homework is Due! Math test on numbers to 20! Other Skills to Work on We have been working on Phoneme segmenting and onset rhyme with words. Have your kiddo work on breaking words into sound parts too. Ex: dog would be D O - G hat would be H A - T Plus, we are working on sounds that make up Nonsense words too. Keep on Practicing! SIGHT WORDS We have learned 2 new sight words this week: Are At New charts will go home next week. Please continue to read with your child to practice the words using expression, fluency, and pace. Try to have your child practice these words using flash cards, reading the charts, and writing sentences using these words too. Continued practice of these skills helps us to become better readers!  Handwriting and Writing This week we have been working on writing a sentence and using a capital letter to start it and a period, question mark, or exclamation point to end it. Please work with your kiddo on this skill at home too. Remember to leave spaces between words. 
