If your child will be going home a different way than normal, please send a note.
If your child is absent, please send a note. Leaving early from class is discouraged. Progress Reports are sent home around the ½ week mark. Please sign and return reports within 3 days. Arrive at school by 7:43. The doors are shut and locked at this time. Try to be on time. Students may not have more than 1 tardy per 9 weeks to be eligible for the End-of-Year Perfect Attendance Award.

From the Nurse: If your child is sick they must have:
no fever or vomiting for 24 hours without medication before returning to school. If your child has frequent headaches: send medicine to keep in the clinic.

Half Days for Professional Development
We will dismiss at 11:50. Students will purchase a sack lunch if they do not bring one from home. Lunch visitors are discouraged. Nov. 8, Feb. 7, May 25

New and difficult concepts – most work is completed independently
(grades may drop after the 1st 9 weeks) Most assignments must be completed in class – attendance is important. Each student will receive guided reading at least once a week. Approximate reading levels will be noted on the report card. Students should read good fit books at home at least 5 days a week; the more your child reads, the better they will get. Take advantage of E-books, Playaways, and websites like Tumblebooks. Library/Guided reading books should go back and forth between home and school each day.

READING: Given each Thursday and due the following Thursday
There are 5 reading log entries – each entry is 20 or more minutes of reading worth 10 points each for a total of 50 points Students must read literary fiction and informational expository text on their “Good Fit” level each week Students must answer at least 3 of the 5 comprehension questions for a total of 50 points A parent signature is worth 5 bonus points Homework may be turned in one day late, with a 10 point deduction Grades are written in the brads of the blue folder Homework counts as one grade each nine weeks

Most work is completed in class
Most work is completed in class. Occasionally students may be asked to finish an assignment at home if they were absent or didn’t use their time wisely in class. Any work sent home must be completed and returned the next day. Students will learn cursive this year. They will be encouraged to practice writing in cursive once they learn the entire alphabet. Students are expected to: Use their best handwriting Write complete sentences that make sense Capitalize the beginning of their sentences Punctuate the end of their sentences Use their time wisely

Spelling words go home (in agenda) each Monday.
4-6 principle words: follow a spelling rule 3-5 high frequency words Spelling tests will be given each Friday. 10 words (1-3 mastery words that follow the rule) 1 student created sentence (include at least 1 spelling word, proper capitalization and punctuation). Students are encouraged to practice at home and show teacher their work for a Paw Power ticket.

Most of our Social Studies is integrated with reading instruction.
We use the following curriculum sources: Social Studies Weekly Scholastic News Brainpop Jr. Later in the school year, homework will focus on current events and be more Social Studies based.

MATH: Given each Monday
There are 4 boxes – each box is worth 25 points Students will earn 25 points for each box(completed each night) if completed correctly and returned on time Homework is checked at the beginning of class Points are noted on Homework sheet daily Absences – checked the day they return 10% of the 9 weeks grade Study Facts Every Day: addition, subtraction, multiplication

Most of our Science is done in class.
We take our science knowledge into the computer lab to create digital representations of what we have learned in class. We use the following curriculum sources: STEMscopes National Geographic Brainpop Jr.

Students are allowed to correct up to 3 failing assignments per 9 weeks in each subject. Tests may not be corrected. Extra credit is available throughout the year.

There are essentially two ways that students or others can use Anonymous Alerts to report incidents involving bullying, cyber- bullying, abuse, self-harm/cutting, drug/ alcohol use, depression, harassment, gang-related activities, and suspicious behavior: 1. Make a report online by clicking the link at the bottom of the main District website at or go to 2. Download the Anonymous Alerts app from the iOS App Store or the Android Google Play store. After downloading the app, click on it, enter setup/login “deerparkisd” and enter “deerparkisd” as your password. The app has already been installed on all District-owned iPads and other devices.
