Search and deductive reasoning

2 Teacher Guide This lesson is designed to teach kids to ask a critical thinking question that you can’t just put into a search box to solve. To do that, we encourage them with smaller questions that search can help them answer. Make sure that you read the notes for each slide. They not only give you teaching tips but also provide answers and hints so you can help the kids if they are having trouble. Want to extend today’s lesson? 3 About this Lesson This lesson is designed to teach the Common Core State Standard: Reading—Informational Text CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.3.3 Describe the relationship between a series of historical events, scientific ideas or concepts, or steps in technical procedures in a text, using language that pertains to time, sequence, and cause/effect. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.3.5 Use text features and search tools (e.g., key words, sidebars, hyperlinks) to locate information relevant to a given topic efficiently. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.3.9 Compare and contrast the most important points and key details presented in two texts on the same topic. Nell Bang-Jensen is a teacher and theater artist living in Philadelphia, PA. Her passion for arts education has led her to a variety of roles including developing curriculum for Philadelphia Young Playwrights and teaching at numerous theaters and schools around the city. She works with playwrights from ages four to ninety on developing new work and is especially interested in alternative literacies and theater for social change. A graduate of Swarthmore College, she currently works in the Artistic Department of the Wilma Theater and, in addition to teaching, is a freelance actor and dramaturg. In 2011, Nell was named a Thomas J. Watson Fellow and spent her fellowship year traveling to seven countries studying how people get their names.

(Possible queries: “Bing/Images: CGI”, “Bing/Images: stop motion animation”). Students should conduct an image search for each of these terms and look at screenshots from movies that use these various techniques. They might notice that CGI images look more like what they are used to seeing on computer and movie screens, especially in action and fantasy films or video games (i.e. where there are techniques that aren’t realistic and can’t actually be filmed.) When searching for stop motion animation, they will see images that look more “homemade” and not generated by a computer. For example, some images show people sculpting clay, arranging figures in front of a screen, etc… Students should begin to articulate the differences they notice in these categories. © 2014 Microsoft Corporation. From Computer-generated imagery (CGI for short) is the application of computer graphics to create or contribute to images in art, printed media, video games, films, television programs, shorts, commercials, videos, and simulators. The visual scenes may be dynamic or static, and may be two-dimensional (2D), though the term "CGI" is most commonly used to refer to 3D computer graphics used for creating scenes or special effects in films and television. © 2014 Microsoft Corporation. (Possible queries: “what is stop motion animation?”, “what does stop motion animation mean?”). From Stop motion is an animation technique that physically manipulates an object so that it appears to move on its own. The object is moved in small increments between individually photographed frames, creating the illusion of movement when the series of frames is played as a continuous sequence. Dolls with movable joints or clay figures are often used in stop motion for their ease of repositioning. Stop motion animation using plasticine is called clay animation or "clay-mation". Not all stop motion requires figures or models; many stop motion films can involve using humans, household appliances and other things for comedic effect. Stop motion using objects is sometimes referred to as object animation. © 2014 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. What does it describe? 4 What are some of the advantages of CGI? What are some of the disadvantages? 5 What are some of the advantages of stop motion animation? What are some of the disadvantages? (Possible queries: “advantages of CGI”, “disadvantages of CGI”). From First, CGI enables filmmakers to create fantastic effects that would cost too much to produce physically, and the process takes less physical space. CGI, when used to create film sets, allows directors to express artistic visions that would have otherwise been impossible or prohibitively expensive. An example is James Cameron's film "Avatar." The rich jungle life of the planet Pandora, by definition, doesn't match anything on Earth, and it would have been easy for an effects team to physically make something that would have looked unbelievable, detracting from the impact of the film. For all its advantages, CGI can be a hindrance, especially when used to create humanoid characters. For example, an effect called the Uncanny Valley notes an audience's acceptance of a robot or another creature as it approaches human-like appearance and behavior. If it's obviously not human, the audience can be endeared. If it's too close to human but just a little off, there is a negative reaction that puts people off the film. It is very difficult to make a truly realistic human figure using CGI, especially with exacting details such as hair. Another problem with CGI is that it requires actors to act against a green screen rather than against a visible backdrop. Actors frequently use the existence of the set to help get themselves into a character role ,and trying to act against a green screen makes it difficult to get into character. Also, glitches in CGI can be noticeable and can ruin immersion when played on the big screen. For example, improper character animation can lead to clipping issues where one part of a body goes through another and reminds the viewer they're simply looking at computer-generated images. Overuse of computer-generated imagery often leads to an audience feeling that the film lacks authenticity. Like anything else in filmmaking, CGI is a tool. It can be a valuable asset when used properly. © 2014 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. (Possible queries: “advantages of stop motion animation”, “disadvantages of stop motion animation”). From The modern revival of stop motion animation has propelled a trend in using weird and wonderful props and methods for creating these types of films. Animators have gone from producing stop motion with a ream of illustrated images, to creating them with plastercine models that need to be painstakingly moved millimetres at a time, and to more obscure props such as food, household objects and animals. Ideas for stop motion videos are becoming more and more imaginative, and the technique is being applied to all types of content, from informational videos to quirky advertisements. Stop motion animation is a highly popular animation type for marketing and explainer videos because of its versatility. There are many benefits of stop motion videos in business and education. They are great for explaining tedious concepts and information in a fun way – whether to employees, clients or students. Just about any topic can be made more interesting using stop motion animation, and students are likely to learn more from this engaging teaching technique. Stop motion can enable some topics to be taught more clearly too. For example, experiments with a slow-occurring reaction can be shown to students using stop motion videos, allowing them to watch the whole process and its different features in a short time. The most notable disadvantage is the time that is takes to produce even a minute of video. Depending on the complexity of the method adopted, achieving this footage could take from days to weeks. The effort that goes into stop motion videos can also be immense, from crafting props to intricately editing. A big team may therefore need to be involved. Of course this depends on the type of video being made, as stop motion animation is now a very broad category of cinematography, which can involve a diverse range of skills and techniques. © 2014 Microsoft Corporation.
