Program Themes and Thrust overview

2 Program Themes and Thrust 2015-2016
Per Nationals, our grade group activity calendars must contain activities that cover the following program themes: Legislative Cultural Recreational Social Educational Health Financial Community Service In addition, our age group activity calendar should cover the following National Programmatic Thrust: EDUCATIONAL (JMB Modules, STE[+a]M for pre-k to 5th grade) CULTURAL (Early Literacy, Healthy Living Initiative, HBCU Linkage) CIVIC (Legislative Advocacy: Cradle to College Pipeline and Community Service: Children Defense Fund.)

3 Legislative Program Theme
Legislative activities work to create an awareness of the world around our children. Activity Examples Visit a police station Visit a fire station Visit the US Capitol Visit a courthouse Hold all chapter mock trial Visit office of your local state representative

4 Cultural Program Theme
Cultural activities gives our children the opportunity to connect with our past, and integrate our past into our future celebrations Activity Examples HBCU Linkage: highlight these wonderful organizations in your chapter Finding your Roots project: DNA testing workshops Kwanzaa celebrations: All chapter event opportunities Visit the National Museum for African American history Roots dinner activity

5 Recreational Program Theme
Recreational activities are planned to give the children an outing where fun is the main objective. Activity Examples Bowling, Skating, go karting, laser tag Amusement Park Visits Backyard Campout Game night Movie Night at a mother’s home or meet at local theater

6 Social Program Theme Activity Examples
Social activities are planned to encourage our children to interact with one another Activity Examples Jack and Jill Day family picnics Story Time at a local library Visit Local Orchard Ice breaker activities Black Family Day activities

7 Education Program Theme
Educational activities are designed to encourage the ongoing teaching of our children Activity Examples Carole Robertson Memorial activities Oratorical Contest Preparation Visit local police station, fire house Haiku poetry session lunch Earth day events

8 Health Program Theme Activity Examples
Health activities are planned to give our children a chance at participating in an activity which promotes physical fitness and highlights the need for awareness Activity Examples Jump Rope for the Heart Event- with the American Heart Association Healthy Walk for Babies- with the March of Dimes Healthy cooking class Earth day events Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure volunteer

9 Financial Program Theme
Financial activities teach our children the importance of money, money matters and the role finances play in our everyday lives. Activity Examples Visit the US mint Visit Wall Street and the NYSE Visit local bank and open up savings accounts

10 Community Service Program Theme
Community service activities are planned to give our children an awareness of the needs of the community that surrounds us. Community Service is encouraged throughout all chapters and should be incorporated into your programming, whether through JJ partners or local organizations. Activity Examples MLK Day of Service-all chapter opportunities Volunteer at Earth Day activities Re-stock a local food pantry Create breakfast bags and hot meals with Boys and Girls Club Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Volunteer

The power to learn and succeed... Fostering leadership development, financial literacy and commitment to STE[A]M. The power to understand and value our African American heritage… Fostering a sense of unity, a better appreciation of our awesome history and our remarkable abilities. The power to unify and inspire change… Fostering a better tomorrow for ALL children. Jacqueline Moore Bowles Leadership Modules: Four (4) Leadership Development Modules: Tweens/Teens (6th thru 12th grades) The “Communications and Public Speaking” module is required Four (4) Financial Literacy Modules : 3rd through 12th grades (ages 8 thru 18) “Put Some Aside: Budgeting” module/strategy is required. STE[A]M: EARLY AGE EXPOSURE to STE[A]M: Focus on 2 years old to 5th Grade Early Literacy: JJOA Bedtime Stories Webinars for 2 years thru 3rd Grade youth Books/stories written and read by African American authors. Healthy Living Initiative: FOCUS ON THE ENTIRE FAMILY JJOA will continue to address the Health Crises of the African American Family. MENTAL HEALTH (NEW FOCUS) Appointment of an Ad Hoc Committee Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) Continue to educate our youth on the value an importance of HBCUs LEGISLATIVE ADVOCACY: Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) Collaborative Join CDF’s “ADVOCACY THAT WORKS” project: 10,000 JJOA voices with The Power to Make A Difference Support CDF Freedom Schools® Program COMMUNITY SERVICE: Cradle to College Initiative “OUR CHILDREN’S KEEPER” Focus on community (non JJOA) children: “To seek for all children the same advantages which we desire for our own”. Work with Boys and Girls Club or “LIKE” organizations in your community The Chapter’s programming should include at least ONE activity (in each grade group) centered on the National Program Thrust under EDUCATION or CULTURAL The Chapter’s programming should include at least ONE activity centered on the National Program Thrust under CIVIC

13 Grade Group Planning Mothers, please be prepared to select your activity months/and your planned activity for next program year / We will break into our grade groups and try to completely fill our calendars for next year so think of activities now Please consult your children, get them involved in selecting activities
