The ideas Road safety has always been a key issue in educating children and young people. It’s vitally important to shape their understanding of and attitudes towards road safety, to give them the best chance to keep safe while they are young and as they get older.
4
Bearing this in mind, our lyceum took up the challenge to participate in the project and we formed an initiative group
5
While brainstorming, we came up with a countless number of ideas, such as carrying out a social survey, doing a flash mob or a performance for younger children, but we ended up choosing to make two films, one about road safety and life situations that can happen to anybody on their way to school and back home and the other about the danger of using earphones while being outside.
6
The initiatives In search of what can be done to improve behavior of road users we initiated to run a Road Safety Week at our lyceum. The younger learners (5 – 6th graders) were asked to participate in ‘The ABC of Road Safety’ best poster competition.
7
The 7th graders were engaged in ‘The Best Expert of Traffic Rules’ questionnaire. They were asked 20 questions to check how well they know basic traffic rules. As a result, we could identify the best experts, who were able to answer all questions correctly. Unfortunately, they constituted only 28% of the whole group, which means all schoolchildren need to be constantly reminded of a proper road behavior.
8
As a follow-up activity they were offered to do 'Stopping distances' task.
9
With 8th graders we decided to hold a discussion about the benefits of walking and cycling for health and the hazards these activities expose them to. Pupils shared their views of why people on foot and bicycles are more at risk of being killed or injured than people in vehicles. After analyzing the results, we came to conclusion that our city infrastructure does not allow our people to cycle safely. Most teens would eagerly switch to cycling and walking, the circumstances permitting.
10
The 9th grade students made 2 videos:
