Biomass Guangyu Hu
2
What is Biomass? Biomass is a renewable energy source that is derived from living or recently living organisms. Biomass includes biological material, not inorganic material like coal.
4
Biomass can be chemically and biochemically treated to convert it to a energy-rich fuel.
5
What are Microalgae? Micro and single-celled
Thousands of different species The fastest-growing plants and produce lots of oil
6
Offshore Membrane Enclosures for Growing Algae
Established by a Research Team Led by Dr. Jonathan Trent in NASA
7
What happen if it leaks? Algae are biodegradable
Fresh water algae die in salt water Plastic which are made of sustainable materials will be reused
8
Advantages of OMEGA System
Recovering the waste water Increasing biodiversity in the ocean surface Facilitating aquaculture, growing shellfish like mussels and scallops
9
Challenges Limitted permitting issues and the time required to get permits Environmental impact of the system Economy issues
10
Future of Biomass as Energy Source
Source: U.S. Energy Information Administration
11
Question Will there be other energy conversion methods (i.e. wind or solar energy) that can be used to coordinate with OMEGA system to maximize the efficiency of producing energy? How will that be?
