2 Outline Why Engineers Need to Worry about IRBs
FAQs about the IRB Committee The IRB Process – How it works and deliberates

3 Why Do Engineers Need to Worry About IRB
My own research – a guided tour through the process

4 FAQs about the IRB Committee
Review research proposals involving human subjects Individual researchers ultimately responsible for their practices Objective input on how researchers can protect their human subjects (HS) Evaluate compliance with ethical standards regarding HS treatment Independent review benefits researchers and the University who could be held accountable for research practices We are not here to make your life miserable They can be very helpful if you get to know them

5 The Importance of Mentors
Mentors are your lifeline! Keep him / her in the loop! They will help you develop your submission How will you conduct the study? How will you interact with your subject? How will you get permission – Informed Consent? They will most likely be the Principal (Primary) Investigator (PI) CPP allows students to be PIs with a faculty mentor who is a co-PI in the IRB process They will help you revise your protocol

6 Basic Instructions Complete CITI training
Request authentication to use the Cayuse IRB software

7 CITI - Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative
Web-based provider of research education training materials  Promotes the quality of and public trust in the research enterprise Used worldwide by academic institutions, government agencies, and commercial organizations to train their researchers

8 Authentication Investigators (PIs) must be authenticated by the Research Compliance Office (RCO) Once authenticated, the PI must wait for the system to update overnight to access his/her account. To ask for an account, with this information: First and last name Bronco ID (the nine digit number, which will eventually be used to link with CITI training data) Bronco (e.g., Gmails and others don't work in the system) Status (faculty, staff, student, unaffiliated, etc., as appropriate) CPP College and Department [Note:  An SSO process, or single sign on, is being developed to make this process easier.]

9 Cayuse Submission “portal” Training

10 Starting Your Submission
Some types of studies, categories of IRB review relating to potential risk and harm to the subjects/participants in the study Exempt Expedited Full Review Protocols Informed Consent Forms (ICFs)
