Plot The series of events in a narrative. At the heart of any plot is a conflict. In Seventh Heaven

Exposition The first stage of a plot in a typical story. The exposition provides important background information and introduces the setting and the important characters. The conflict the characters face may also be introduced in the exposition, or it may be introduced later, in the rising action. In Seventh Heaven

Conflict A struggle between opposing forces. Examples include man vs. man, man vs. fate, man vs. self, man vs. nature, man vs. society An external conflict involves a character pitted against an outside force, such as nature, a physical obstacle or another character. An internal conflict is one that occurs within a character. In Seventh Heaven

Rising Action Rising action is the stage in a plot in which the conflict develops and story events build toward a climax. During this stage, complications arise that make the conflict more intense. Tension grows as the characters strugle to resolve the conflict. In Seventh Heaven

Climax In a plot, the climax is the point of maximum interest or tension. Usually the climax is a turning point in the story, which occurs after the reader has understood the conflict and become emotionally involved with the characters. The climax sometimes, but not always, points to the resolution of the conflict. In Seventh Heaven

Falling Action In a plot, the falling action follows the climax and shows the results of the important action that happened at the climax. Tension eases as the falling action begins; however, the final outcome of the story is not yet fully worked out at this stage. Events in the falling action lead to the resolution of the plot.
