1 Q1W5: Solving Linear Equations With One Variable
Pre-Algebra Q1W5: Solving Linear Equations With One Variable

2 Objectives I can solve linear equations in one variable.
I can solve linear equations using the distributive property and collecting like terms. I can give examples of linear equations in one variable with one solution, infinitely many solutions, or no solutions.  Note: This is week 1 of a 2 week unit.

3 What is a Linear Equation?
Linear Equation: an equation that gives a straight line when plotted on a graph.

4 Examples of linear equations in one variable
4 – 2k = -5(k+7) (Next Week) Note: Linear equations have “simple variables.” (NO EXPONENTS.)

5 Inverse Operations

6 Solve using Inverse Operations

7 Practice: Solve for w 1. w + 3 = 4 2. r + 8 = 12 3. y + 2 = 7

8 Solve Using Inverse Operations

9 Practice: Solve for x 1. x – 4 = 20 2. b – 7 = 1 3. n – 2 = 7

10 Practice: Solve for x 5x = 15 7x = 28 5x = 45

11 Two Step Linear Equations (guided)
5x + 4 = 24 x = 21 First, subtract 4; then divide by 5. First, add 3; then divide by 9.

12 Two Step Linear Equations (practice)
4x + 7 = 15 4x – 8 = 8

13 Distributive Property
Sometimes, we have to use the “distributive property” to solve linear equations. Example 1: 2(x+7) = 16 Example 2: 2(3x +1) = 20

14 Bonus Problem- Solve 5(2x – 3) = 35 (hint: distribute, then solve)
