1 Cooling Tower Blowdown Recovery using Thermal Desalination
A viable solution for water starved power plants to satisfy DM, service and potable water needs

2 Necessity of water reuse
Cooling water circuit should be maintained at a reasonable concentration to ensure that the condenser tubes are clean and operates as per design conditions. To ensure concentration, a sizable portion has to be blown down and cleaner water should be made up Becomes a problem for power plants that are in-land. 31/03/2015 & 01/04/2016 GB Saline Water Solutions Pvt Ltd

3 Pollution Control and Water Usage Norms
Central Pollution Control board states total dissolved solids that can be discharged to A. inland surface waters, B. public sewers, C. on land for irrigation should not exceed 2100 mg/l 31/03/2015 & 01/04/2016 GB Saline Water Solutions Pvt Ltd

4 MoEF Norms for Water Consumption
Period Before 31 st December 2003 From 1st Jan 2004 to 31st Dec 2016 From 1st Jan 2017 Standard for water consumption All plants with once through cooling to install cooling tower and have maximum specific water consumption of 3.5 m3/MWh All existing cooling tower based plants to reduce specific water consumption to below 3.5 m3/MWh New plants after 1st January 2017 to have maximum specific water consumption of 2.5 m3/MWh and achieve zero waste water discharged 31/03/2015 & 01/04/2016 GB Saline Water Solutions Pvt Ltd

5 Achievement of Standards
To achieve the standards set by the governmental agencies, it is becoming necessary to innovate and think of long term solutions that are economically and technologically feasible 31/03/2015 & 01/04/2016 GB Saline Water Solutions Pvt Ltd

6 Multi Effect Distillation
Mechanical equipment with minimal moving parts. Simple construction and easy to maintain and operate No pre treatment required. Very minimal chemicals required ( Antiscalant of 2 ppm) 31/03/2015 & 01/04/2016 GB Saline Water Solutions Pvt Ltd

7 All the above are readily available in a power plant
Inputs required Spent steam of 0.3 bar(a) pressure or 2 bar (a) bleed steam Electricity to run 5 nos of pumps Cooling tower blowdown water to cool the condenser of the MED and as make up to the MED All the above are readily available in a power plant 31/03/2015 & 01/04/2016 GB Saline Water Solutions Pvt Ltd

8 Maximum Concentration possible
Flow Rate (kg/hr) TDS (mg/l) Ca++ (mg/l) Total Salt (kg) Input 1000 800 100 0.8 Brine 110.86 7200 900 Distillate 889.14 2 ~0 We are limited only by the concentration of the Calcium ions and sulphate ions in the blowdown water. 31/03/2015 & 01/04/2016 GB Saline Water Solutions Pvt Ltd

9 Water Recovery 80-90 % of blowdown water can be recovered depending on location of the plant. This water is of high purity 2-5 ppm and can be used in the following applications. Make up water to the boiler after passing through the existing DM plant. Service Water Potable Water – After remineralisation. 31/03/2015 & 01/04/2016 GB Saline Water Solutions Pvt Ltd

10 Brine discharge Brine can be given as input to ZLD systems and solids can be collected and disposed off easily. By using the MED, the load on the ZLD will be considerably reduced. 31/03/2015 & 01/04/2016 GB Saline Water Solutions Pvt Ltd

11 Steam Requirement Spent steam of 0.3 bar (a) at our battery limit
2 bar(a) from turbine bleed 10 bar(a) from turbine bleed - Recommended Hot water of 90 deg C generated through a hot water generated utilising the heat of flue gas at the exhaust of ID fan. 31/03/2015 & 01/04/2016 GB Saline Water Solutions Pvt Ltd
