Project idea Finnish Forest Research Institute contacted Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences, Building Services Programme, in June 2006 The Institute studies the growing of forest and trees and the suitability of foreign trees to Finnish climate There is a regional research laboratory in Punkaharju in Eastern Finland There they have a research chamber for cones The reason for the phone call: to develop the thermal conditions of the research chamber for cones Visit to Punkaharju during the summer 2006 Marianna Luoma

Existing research chamber for the cones
Dimensions: width about 3 m, depth about 3,8 m, height about 3 m Metal door, width about 0,9 m Inner walls of the chamber are covered with building board One single air conditioning unit serves the research chamber No humidity control There are several shelves in the chamber Cones are put into boxes on the shelves Marianna Luoma

About 10 different research chambers for the cones (volume 1-2 m3) Each chamber could be controlled individually, as well as monitored for: Temperature Humidity THE NEW SYSTEM SHOULD OPERATE WELL AND BE CHEAP TO INSTALL! Marianna Luoma

Year round use For the studies of small amounts of cones The cones of different types of trees could be studied in different thermal conditions At the same time, they could run several different tests in different research chambers Marianna Luoma

Requirements for the new research chamber
About 10 different research chambers Temperature range +20 … +60 oC Temperature rise +2 … 5 oC per hour, when the temperature of +60 oC should be reached Relative humidity %RH …. 60/70 %RH. When the desired temperature is reached, it should keep the desired relative humidity, for example +50 oC ja 70 %RH for three hours Each chamber has to be individually programmed The information of the thermal conditions of each chamber should be monitored and controlled automatically by a computer Marianna Luoma

Contents of the proposal: Prelimary study about HVAC and building automation solutions that would be capable of meeting the requirements set for the test chambers Preliminary drawings about different solutions Preliminary estimation of costs Marianna Luoma

Starting to prepare the proposal
What kind of background information would we need to get from the Forest Research Institute? Principle solutions for an HVAC system, in which the thermal conditions (temperature and humidity) could be controlled individually for each research chamber What kind of other issues should we take into account? What kind of expertise is needed in the project group? The preliminary study would consist of several phases. What would they be? Marianna Luoma

Doing this exercise The purpose of this exercise is to get an idea of the principles of the solutions; detailed drawings and dimensions are not needed You will work in groups of 3 persons You should explain your solutions in written form The group has to prepare a written answer and present it with the help of a slide show You could draw some sketches of the principal solutions Put the names of the group members to your answer The oral presentations are held on Tuesday the 27th of September 2011 Marianna Luoma
