5th Grade Math Content Training Session 1
Melissa Carli 3-5 Math Program Specialist
2
Topic 1 Task 5 min Bring base ten blocks. 5.NBT.1.2
3
Sample Explanation When you multiply by a ten, you add a zero to the product. Therefore, 10x10=100. When you multiply by a hundred, you add two zeros to the product. Therefore, 10x100=1,000. Or would you rather a student justify their answer this way…. 1 min
4
There are ten batteries in each pack.
Ten packs of batteries is ten groups of ten, or one hundred. Therefore, 10 x 10 = 100 One hundred packs of batteries is one hundred groups of ten, which can be rearranged as ten groups of one hundred, or one thousand. Therefore, 10 x 100 = 1,000 5 min Talk to a neighbor about this justification
5
8 Mathematical Practices
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. Model with mathematics. Use appropriate tools strategically. Attend to precision. Look for and make use of structure. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. 1 min

5th Grade Content Training
Learning Goal: Participants will gain a deeper understanding of content taught in the first quarter and will plan collaboratively for instruction aligned to the Math Florida Standards. Agenda Examine resources to unpack/understand the standards Practice and plan for teaching of strategies Plan for the use of tasks and the teaching of strategies to align with the standards 2 minutes Next Steps: Share your plans with your team. Bring feedback from 1st Quarter plans and tasks in October. Bring questions/ideas for 2nd Quarter Topics in October. Summarizing Activity: Exit Ticket

CRA Concrete: Manipulatives
Representational: Drawings and Visual Models Abstract: Numbers and equations Look at Topic 1. How was Topic 1 sequenced to align to the CRA method? Concrete: Use base ten blocks to explore decimal place value and multiplying by ten. Representational: Pictures, place value charts Abstract: Moving the decimal 5 min

15
5 min Since there are not any numbers present on the number line, you are forced to reason and think conceptually about rounding as opposed to using “rules”.

Sample Explanation When multiplying by 10, move the decimal one space to the left. So 0.4 x 10 equals 4 and 3.4 x 10 = 34. Or would you rather a student justify why like this… 5 min
49
We can also see this as 4 groups of 10 tenths.
0.4 is 4 tenths We can also see this as 4 groups of 10 tenths.
