OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION Junior Fair Market Goats Exhibiting Market Goats at the Lawrence County Junior Fair Rachael Fraley, 4-H Youth Development Educator, Lawrence County, OSU Extension, The Ohio State University. Ohio 4-H Youth Development – Junior Fair Exhibition Requirements To exhibit at the county fair, the 4-H member must meet the following expectations: The 4-H member must be eight and in the 3rd grade, as of January 1st of the year in which they plan to exhibit. Membership eligibility ends December 31st of the calendar year in which the member reaches the age of nineteen. Must complete the Market goat Project and Record Book and attend five 4-H Club Meetings with their 4-H community club. Must attend Quality Assurance training yearly. A Quality Assurance Test-Out option is available for members age twelve years and older and in their second year of the project. Must enroll in the 4-H project by the enrollment deadline of March 15th. (Changes to project will be accepted until March 31st.) Must conduct themselves according to the 4-H Member Code of Conduct. Showman Etiquette Youth are expected to conduct themselves in a courteous, respectful manner, use appropriate language, exhibit good sportsmanship, and be a positive role model. Showmanship starts as soon as you begin your project; it is ones ability to train and handle the animal, as well as the manner in which he/she presents the animal. Exhibitors should also: Demonstrate a willingness to help others; be polite and well-mannered to other showmen and officials. Demonstrate a well groomed/fitted animal. Demonstrate knowledge of animal production and accepted ring practices and customs. As you begin your project look for an experienced 4-H member in your club or project area for help! There are many people willing to help you succeed. FreeImages.com Lawrence County Junior Fair Market Goats Rules & Regulations Market goats must be born on or after December 1st, 2016. Market goats must be brought to the Lawrence County Fairgrounds to be tagged and registered at the designated pre-fair tag-in; members may tag in up to three goats. Tag-In: Saturday, April 29th (8:00-11:00am) Members may select up to two goats for junior fair exhibition. The goats must be weighed in at the start of the county fair. Market goats must weigh at least 60lbs. (Only market goats meeting these requirements will be eligible for show). Weigh-In: July 8th, 2017 (6:00 – 10:00 am) Members are required to exhibit in both the market and showmanship shows to be eligible to sell their project through the Junior Fair Sale and receive their project completion premium. Market: Monday, July 10th (6:00 pm) Showmanship: Tuesday, July 11th (11:00 am) Market goats may be does or wethers (castrated males). All market goats must have an official USDA scrapies tag in their ear at time of weigh-in. Ideally, all wethers should be dis-budded or have their horns cut back to approximately one inch in length. However, if not dis-budded, horn tips must be cut off in a blunt manner. All goats must be clipped and shown with a collar, prong halters/collars are not permitted. OSU EXTENSION, LAWRENCE COUNTY

Exhibiting Market Goats at the Lawrence County Junior Fair —page 2 Market Show: The Market goat show is broken down into weight classes. 4-H members will exhibit the pen of two market goats together, during their designated weight class. Weight classes are posted outside of the Small Animal Shelter at least 24 hours prior to show. A final drive of weight class winners will determine the Top 10 placings of the Market Show. All others will be placed according to a numerical system, pre-determined by weight and class placing. All exhibitors should be present no later than thirty minutes pre-show. All exhibitors should also be within the vicinity of the show arena until the conclusion of the show. Showmanship Show: Showmanship is broken down into age divisions; junior and senior. Junior showmanship are ages eight to thirteen, Senior showmanship are ages fourteen to eighteen. Each division will be broken into classes, by age. Each class winner, within the division, will compete for junior or senior showman. There will be an overall Junior Showman and an overall Senior Showman winner. These winners are invited to participate in the Junior and Senior Showman of Showman contest; Friday of Fair at 10:00 am. Exhibitor Dress Code Lawrence County Fair dress code during show and sale consist of clean dress. Anyone in the show/sale arena must wear boots or leather shoes at all times. Long pants with no holes are required when in the show/sale arena. No advertisements on clothing (with the exception of 4-H or FFA logos, but no identification of club or chapter). Shirts must have shoulders and appropriate necklines. No cut-out arms are permitted. No hats are permitted and all tattoos must be covered. The use of cell phone, iPads, etc. are prohibited during show and sale. Junior Fair Sale Requirements & Procedure The Market goat Junior Fair Sale will be held Saturday, July 15th in the Large Animal Barn. Market goat exhibitors may choose to sell one goat during this time. The second goat must go to market or be drop slipped from the sale. The Junior Fair Sale is a terminal Sale. Exhibitors are encouraged to reach out to potential buyers and invite them to the Junior Fair Sale to bid on their project; as well as thank their buyers immediately following the sale of their animal and follow-up with a thank you card. If an exhibitor chooses not to participate in the Junior Fair Sale, Market goat exhibitors may opt to Drop-Slip their animal from the sale to take home, private treaty, or send to market themselves. Drop-Slip forms must be submitted by the designated time and goats must be removed from the fairgrounds during the designated load out time. Drop-Slip Submission: 1 hour post-market show or Wednesday, July 12th (10:00 – 12:00 pm) Drop-Slip Load Out: Friday, July 14th (7:00 –10:00 am) Learning Objectives By exhibiting your Market goats at the county fair, we hope you experience a sense of belonging through encouragement and support to and from your 4-H peers, advisors, and other community members. Housing Supplies & Expectations Market goats must be housed at the county fair for the duration of the fair; from Saturday of weigh-in until the designated load out times. One bag of shavings are supplied, however as you clean your pen you may need more. Exhibitors are required to supply: Waterer Feeder & Feed Halter Collar Recommended: Soap, water hose, combs, towels, blanket covers, stand, and tack box. *No personal fans permitted Exhibitors are required to provide fresh food and water, and clean their pen daily.
