How can I help my struggling reader?

WHAT IS A STRUGGLING READER?
A struggling reader is a child who is reading below their grade level or reading on grade-level but having trouble with comprehension. They have trouble analyzing information, defining vocabulary words or using comprehension strategies.

HOW ARE WE IDENTIFYING STRUGGLING READERS?
Holcomb Bridge administers a standardized test for the assessment of reading to each student to help determine their reading level. Teacher assessment.

FIRST Picture your home. Close your eyes.
Where are the books? Where are the magazines? Or is everything electronic? THERE SHOULD BE BOOKS OR MAGAZINES. GO TO THE LIBRARY (Our local library: East Roswell Branch)

Join Them! Seeing is believing!
SECOND Join Them! Seeing is believing! Read with your children. Children who see their parents reading are more likely to develop good reading habits.

HOW DO I GET A CHILD WHO IS READING, TO THE NEXT LEVEL?

MAKE WORDS COME ALIVE Turn on the closed captioning on your TV.
Print the lyrics to their favorite songs. Use the “Make a Connection” reading strategy to help with comprehension.

BUILD THE DESIRE FOR TEXT
Buy the comic books they love. Bring attention to the novels the latest movies are based on. Create a game night with games like Scrabble, Boggle. MAKE IT FUN!!
