1 Head protection There are a number of different types of head
protection. The one most commonly used in construction is the hard hat. This is used to protect the head from knocks and falling objects and has an adjustable strap to ensure a good fit. They can come with attachments for ear defenders or eye protection. They must not be worn on top of any other type of headwear.

2 Eye protection Eye protection is used to protect the eyes from
dust and flying debris. There are three main types which are mostly made from durable plastic.

3 Safety Goggles These should be used when there is a danger of
dust getting into the eyes or a chance of an impact injury, especially from the side.

4 Safety Glasses These give less protection than goggles,
because they don’t fully enclose the eyes, they protect from flying debris and they are less likely to steam up when being used in a hot environment.

5 Facemasks Facemasks protect the entire face from flying
debris, but they do not, protect your eyes from dust.

6 Foot Protection Safety boots have a steel toe-cap and steel mid-sole they are used to protect the feet from falling objects and to prevent sharp things like nails from injuring your foot. Because of their high sides they also help protect against ankle injury when working in rough ground.

7 Respiratory protection
Respiratory protection is used to help prevent you from breathing in dust or fumes that could do you harm. One of the most common types of respiratory protection is the dust mask. Dust masks are lightweight, comfortable and easy to fit. They are for personal use only and must be changed regularly. Dust masks will only give protection from non-toxic dust. If you are likely to be exposed to toxic dust or fumes, a full respiratory system must be used.

8 Hand protection There are several different types of hand protection,
which type you use will depend on the job you are going to do e.g., you should not wear lightweight rubber gloves when lifting glass these would not give much protection, so leather gauntlets would be more suitable. If you were working with chemicals, plastic coated gloves will provide better protection.

9 Safety signs Safety signs are a way of passing safety information on using colours and a minimum of words, which draws attention to things that could affect your health and safety. There are four main categories of safety signs Mandatory Prohibition Warning Safe condition

10 Safety signs Mandatory signs – tell you that something MUST be done. They have a white symbol on a blue circular background. Prohibition signs – tell you that something MUST NOT be done. They have a white background inside a red circle with a red line through it.

11 Safety signs Warning signs – these alert you to a specific hazard. They have a yellow triangular background inside a black border. Safe condition signs – give you useful information like the location of first aid points and fire exits. They have a white symbol on a green background.
