Lord Of the flies Chapters 10-12

Chapter 10 Why is the title of this chapter “The Shell and the Glasses”? Use text to support your answer. Connect to the allegory of human nature.

Chapter 11 How is Chapter 11 Piggy’s chapter? Discuss the change in his character. Use text. Does Golding foreshadow Piggy’s demise? Find symbolism in Piggy’s death (p. 181). How is his death similar to Simon’s?

Chapter 12 What does Jack’s tribe eventually do to catch (or kill) Ralph? What did Jack’s tribe unknowingly do because of this? How is this ironic? Look at the final paragraph on page 200 to the top of page 201. If the novel starts as the Garden of Eden, how does it end?

Explain the following quote:
“Ralph wept for the end of innocence, the darkness of man’s heart, and the fall through the air of the true, wise friend called Piggy” (p. 202). What is the last image referenced in the novel? Why is it important?

Thinking about your paper…
How would Golding answer the following question: What is the essence of human nature?

Extra Questions

Question 1 Describe Ralph’s encounter with the Lord of the Flies on page 185. How does this passage further the allegory of the skull? Is it similar to the conch? Explain.

Question 2 Look at page 184. Explain the quote, “Then there was that indefinable connection between [Ralph] and Jack; who therefore would never let him alone; never.” What is that “indefinable connection”?

Question 3 What is the significance of a “stick sharpened at both ends”? Refer back to page 136. Who has one in this chapter?

Question 6 What is the last image referenced in the novel? Explain what this says about how Golding feels about our essential question, “What is the essence of human nature?”

Now that we have finished Lord of the Flies, what did you think of the novel? What did you like? What didn’t you like? What do you think overall? You can be honest.

Respond to one of the following:
Do we, as a culture, have “war fever”? Support your opinion with examples. Do you think war is fundamental to only the “male psyche”? Support your opinion with examples.

Now that we have finished looking at “Why Men Love War,” write a brief reflection (3-4 sentences) in which you connect your thoughts on the article to the idea of human nature.
