2. How do we create a safe work place
Recognize hazards in Ag mechanics
List the types of parts and areas identified by various safety colors

You will get tired of me telling you to be safe and what to do and put your glasses back on
You will hate watching the safety videos and taking test
It only takes 1 second of carelessness and some one could wind up like this

4. Safety means freedom from accidents
That is our #1 goal this year NO ACCIDENTS
No lost fingers, no head injuries and no deaths.
Please I beg you be careful and pay attention

5. Injuries may result from
Falling
Inhaling
Electrical contact
Exposure to heat or cold
Striking against
Getting hit
Getting caught in
Exposure to fire

6. How do we prevent injuries
Install all electrical devices according to the National Electric Code
Install all machinery according to manufactures code
Keep all tools and equipment adjusted or fitted according to specs
Use tools and equipment skillfully

7. How do we prevent injuries
Provide proper storage for tools, materials, fuels, chemicals, and waste materials
Keep work areas clean and free of tools, materials, grease and dirt
Keep moving parts properly shielded
Manage all situations to avoid the likelihood of falling objects

8. How do we prevent injuries
Avoid areas where objects may fall
Avoid the flight path of objects that could be thrown by machines
Protect eyes, ears, face, feet and other parts of the body with protective clothing and devices
Move slowly enough to avoid creating hazards to self and others
Read and head all precautions

10. Safety Colors
National Organizations (American Society of Ag Engineers, American Vocational Association, and National Safety Council) work together to develop safety color coding systems for shops
Developed to alert people to danger or hazards
Help people locate certain objects
Make the shop a pleasant workplace
Promote cleanliness and order
Help people react to emergencies

11. Safety Color
Each color or combination of colors conveys a specific message based on a standard code
You need to know what each color means and memorize the message

12. Red
DANGER- is used to identify items of danger or emergency such as safety switches and fire equipment

13. Orange
Warning- is used to designate machine hazards such as edges and openings
Also used as background for electrical switches, levers and controls

14. Yellow
Caution- like amber traffic lights, means be cautious. Used to ID parts of machines, such as wheels, levers and knobs that control or adjust the machine.
Yellow and Black stripes are used in combination to mark stairs, protruding objects and other stationary objects

15. Blue
Information- is used for signs if a warning or caution is intended.
Such signs are made with white letters on blue background and carry messages

16. Green
Safety- Indicates the presence of safety equipment, safety areas, first aid and medical practice

17. Black & Yellow Diagonal Stripes
Radioactive- This marks for radiation hazards

18. White White is used to mark off traffic areas
White arrows indicate the direction of traffic
White lines also mark work areas around objects in the shop.
Yellow may also be used to mark work areas too.

19. White and Black Stripes
White and Black in alternate stripes or checkers are traffic markings
An example is to mark traffic stopping barricades

20. Grey Grey is used on floors of work areas in the shop
It provides good contrast for other safety colors

21. Focal Colors
The nationally accepted shop safety color-coding system includes 3 focal colors
A focal color is used to draw attention to large items such as machines, cabinets and floors
The 3 focal colors are ivory, vista green and alumnium

Ivory is used to highlight or improve visability of certain items.
These items include tool storage chest, tabel edges, and free standing vises and anvils

It is used to paint bodies of machinery, cabinets and stationary tools and contrasts with safety colors

These colors are used in combination with other colors to mark pipes, hoses and vents
Lines that contain oxygen, natural gas, compressed air and water all may have these focal colors on them

Most work situations in Ag mech require some sort of body protection

Eyes
Ears
Hands
Arms
Feet
Legs
Are the easiest to get injured

The next best is protective devices

Safety Glasses and Face Shields
They are the most critical parts of the body to be protected
The eyes are easily damaged and the face is easily disfigured

Flying objects striking the head can easily cause blindness, drain bamage, or even death.
Acids, caustic chemicals, fertilizers, pesticides, solvents, molten metal, and hot water are all dangerous materials
You should have a face shield on when working with them

Safety Glasses and goggles offer minimum protection and are the first line of defense for the eyes
They should be impact resistant, should fit the face and be clear and visablie
Special shaded goggles are need when using the cutting torch

Every shop should also be equipped with a special eye wash station

Hair restraints- all students who have long hair will need to have it in a pony tail tucked into their shirt
Hair can easily be grabbed by a machine and cause serious damage

34. Protective Clothing
Coveralls- are the most vestal and all around item of clothing for Ag mech
They cover every part of your body (except your face)
They either have buttons or zippers and can be easily removed
They do not have sleeve or pant cuffs
Cuffs are dangerous because sparks can get caught in there and start burning

35. Protective Clothing
Aprons- provide protection to the front part of your waist area
Should not be worn around moving tools like saws are routers

36. Protective Clothing
Shop Coats (lab coats)- provide upper body and upper leg protection also it is easily put on or taken off

Footwear- leather shoes with steel toes are recommended when in the shop or using machinery
Leather provides strength and durability they can resist some weight and liquids or sparks hitting them
NO open toed shoes- If you wear them you will not be permitted in the shop and will have to do a LONG writing assignment

Gloves- Keep hands warm in cold conditions, and protect the hands from cuts and abrasions
When welding use leather gloves only

Hardhats- must be worn when working with equipment that is over your head

Masks & Respirators- cover the nose and mouth and help filter out particles of dust or spray paint
Continuous inhaling of dust can lead to serious lung problems such as black lung and cancer

Earmuffs and Ear Plugs- are recommended when working with certain noise levels
When using certain equipment like tractors, chain saws and wood saws for hours at a time ear loose can occur.
Noise Intensity refers to the energy in the sound waves

42. Protective Clothing
Noise duration refers to the length of time a person is exposed to a sound
Distance has a great effect on sound pressure or intensity
A person standing 5 feet from a piece of machinery can reduce the sound pressure to 25% by moving 5 feet away
The decibel (dB) is the standard unit of sound

43. Protective Clothing
The Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) has established a 90 dB noise level for an 8 hour day as the maximum safe limit

44. Summary What we do in the shop is dangerous if improperly used
Each shop must be organized and clean to help prevent accidents from happening
