Naming Compounds Created by: Mrs. Dube
2
What is a compound? A compound is a substance made of atoms of two or more different elements. Chemical bonds hold the atoms of different elements together in a compound. Chemical bonds help determine the properties of a compound.
3
Properties of Compounds
The properties of a compound depend not only on the atoms contained in the compound, but also on how the atoms are arranged. Properties of a compound are very different from the properties of the elements that make up the compound. Ex. Water is made up of hydrogen and oxygen which are both colorless, odorless gases at room temperature!
4
Chemical Formulas Atoms combine in predictable numbers!
A given compound always contains atoms of elements in a specific ratio. A chemical formula uses the chemical symbols of the elements from the periodic table to represent the atoms of the elements and their ratios in a chemical compound A subscript is a number written to the right of a chemical symbol and slightly below the symbol to indicate the number of atoms of that specific element present in the compound
5
Writing Chemical Formulas
To write the chemical formula for carbon dioxide, a compound consisting of one atom of carbon attached by chemical bonds to two atoms of oxygen you must … First, find the symbols for carbon and oxygen on the periodic table and write the symbols side by side in the order they exist in the compound carbon dioxide so carbon comes first (C) and then oxygen next (O) Now, you have to indicate that there are two oxygen atoms present with a subscript so you write a small 2 next to the oxygen in the formula: CO2
6
Subscripts The subscript 1 is never used.
If a compound has only one atom of a specific element, then only the chemical symbol will be used without a subscript For example, methane gas has one carbon atom and four hydrogen atoms so it would be written as CH4
7
Now you try! Write the chemical formula for the compounds listed below: Sodium chloride which consists of one sodium and one chlorine atom Carbon monoxide which contains one carbon and one oxygen atom
8
Your Turn to Try! Write the chemical formula for the compounds listed below: Hydrogen peroxide which contains two hydrogen and two oxygen atoms Potassium chloride which contains one potassium atom and one chlorine atom
9
Checking for Understanding
How do the properties of a compound compare to the properties of the elements that make them? How many atoms are in the compound represented by the formula C12H22O11? Explain how you know.
