New Directions

2 Purpose Opportunities for many electives Includes college credit
High school courses that are unavailable Students can participate in courses, such as Japanese, German, Psychology, Medieval Studies, Digital Photography, and a variety of Advanced Placement courses

3 Participation Enrollment numbers: Guidelines include:
Fall 2011 – 215 students Spring 2012 – 220 students Guidelines include: COA – Must be a Junior or Senior, have a 3.0 GPA, demonstrate college readiness on placement test, and Moodle test for all online courses.

4 Participation Guidelines (cont.):
NCVPS – Overall GPA of 2.0 and a GPA of 2.5 in English courses, no more than 10 absences during the previous school year. Other guidelines promoting success, such as, attendance which includes students who fail an online course and must have permission to take another. All rosters are reviewed numerous times prior to beginning of class.

5 Grades for Fall 2011 COA grades:
Eighty-one percent of students (162 students) passed with an A, B, or C Only 4.5% of students withdrew Slightly more than 5% scored a D and 9% scored an F Most students who did not pass, failed both courses.

6 Delivery of Courses COA provides CTE courses, Culinary, Electrical, and Automotive are face to face courses.(60 students for Spring, 2012). NCVPS and COA provide online courses for JAHHS students.(160 students for Spring, 2012).

Computer labs includes desktop lab and mobile lab Facilitators are able to access student accounts and work with students to insure success

8 Future Options Delivery System Options
Reconsideration of the use of time and space Investigation of off-campus monitoring Parent/student contracts to provide other work situations Guidelines for students who can choose the option of working on course work away from campus Research of “best practices” in Distance Learning Will provide more opportunities for more students to participate in Distance Learning Program

9 Future Options Blended Courses
Includes face to face time, online learning; both asynchronous and synchronous. Teacher understands the importance of facilitating learning Provides learners more opportunities for interaction during and after school hours Teacher’s role will include online content development, communication, guiding instruction, and assessment

10 Future Options Alternative Opportunities/School
Credit Recovery Blended course work Homebound course work Research into “best practices” for the development of all options for students of various needs, ie, attendance issues and behavioral issues.

11 Cost of technology at Alternative School
Internet access $14,000(prior to erate funding) Wiring, switches, access points $11,000 Computers $21,000 Other technological needs, ie, phones, will bring the total to $52,000
