1 Maths project involving the following concepts:
Welcome to the Zoo Maths project involving the following concepts: Area Perimeter Volume Multiplication Money Design Location Shape

2 Create a map of your zoo Using A3 grid paper, create a map of your zoo. Remember to include: Enclosures for different animals Pathways Food stalls Areas for people to sit and eat Toilets A grid reference A scale e.g. 1cm = 1m Each of the places you draw must be rectangular or square in shape (no round edges). Once you have designed your zoo, give it a name. A B C D E 1 2 3 4 5

3 Let’s look at our enclosures!
Dimensions Perimeter Area Meerkat enclosure Length 12m Width 6m = 36m 12x6=72m2 What kinds of animals are in your enclosures? Are they large, small or medium sized animals? In order to make sure your animals have enough space to roam around, find the area and perimeter of each enclosure, recording it the table provided. Please make sure you have clearly labelled each enclosure.

4 What will it cost? Enclosure Fencing Material Working Out Cost Meerkat enclosure Glass panels P=36m 36m x $87 $3,132 In order to create your zoo, you must calculate how much it will cost to make the perimeter of each enclosure. Decide what kind of material each animal will need around their enclosure and then figure out the costs, adding the total cost at the end. The materials you can use are: Crisscross wiring $13 per meter Bar fencing $52 per meter Glass panels $87 per meter

5 The best view! To make it easier for people to visit your zoo, you should find the best way to walk around your zoo to view all the animals. Make a detailed plan for people to use when they attend your zoo. You can do this by using: Your grid chart Directions (N, S, E, W, left, right etc.) Length of how far people should walk using your scale

6 Give your zoo character!
Your zoo is almost planned! All good zoos have a logo and a zoo keeper uniform. Design a logo and uniform for your zoo and include that logo on your zoo keeper uniform. If you have enough time, also design what the entrance tickets to you zoo will look like

7 Let’s look at our enclosures!
Dimensions Working out Volume Meerkat enclosure Length 12m Width 6m Height 3m 12x6x3 219m3 Now that you have checked how much floor space your animals have in their enclosures (area), you had better plan the height of each enclosure. You already have the length and width of the enclosures, now decide on the height and record it in the table. Once you have your dimensions, work out the volume of each enclosure. After working out the volume of the enclosure, create a net and construct the enclosure on your map.
