Mini Debate (Milgram) and Milgram’s three variations
2
Ethics mini debate – The trial!
Group one Milgram and his confederates (Defence) You believe you can justify your decisions. Why did Milgram deceive his participants? Did he provide the right to withdraw? Did he harm the participant? What did he do to ensure there were no lasting problems? Group two Ethical board (Prosecution) You believe what took place in Yale was unacceptable What did Milgram do that was unethical? Why is this a problem?

Milgram’s variations After the original study Milgram conducted various variations of basic study. For this course we are going to be focussing on three of his variations. You will need to have to be able to describe each variation and provide evaluation points for each variation. Quick variations puzzle! Once you have matched up the pieces – discuss the differences between the variations and the original study Take a photo! Why did Milgram change his basic study?

Provide strengths and weaknesses. Tip- It’s ok for the evaluation points to be similar to the original study however your examples must clearly relate to the variation

P A weakness of Middleton’s study into obedience is that it has low generalisability due to the sample of girls used. For example Middleton used a volunteer sample of 22 girls all between the ages of 13 and 15. Furthermore the girls were all from the same school (Cross High School) in Brighton and they all responded to the advert that was placed in their school reception. This shows that the sample is unrepresentative and that the findings can’t be generalised to the wider population as a different sample, of boys or girls from a different school, may react differently to the task Middleton set to test obedience and the levels of obedience found may not be the same.
