Chapter 2 Notes (with talking points)
Taking Charge of your Health Lessons 1 and 2
2
Lesson 1: Building Health Skills
Health Skills are tools and strategies to maintain, protect, and improve all aspects of your health Communication Refusal Conflict Resolution Accessing Info Analyzing influences Practicing healthful behaviors Stress Management Advocacy Decision Making Goal Setting
3
Communication Skills How you give and receive information (talking and listening) Use “I” messages (Ex: “I feel upset when you don’t call when you say you will”) Communicate with respect and caring (Ex: calm voice, good tone) Be an active listener (Ex: pay attention, don’t interrupt, try to understand their side)
4
Let’s Practice! I will give you an example of poor communication.
You will try to “fix” it by giving me an example of how you would use an “I” message, respect and caring, or active listening instead.
5
Refusal Skills Knowing how to say “no” to unsafe or unhealthful behaviors, or that go against your values (chart of pg. 36) Say “no” in a firm voice Explain why Offer alternatives Stand your ground Leave if necessary
6
More Practice! I am going to try and convince you to do something that is unsafe. See if you can block my attempt by using good refusal skills. Remember, say “no”, explain why, offer alternatives, stand your ground, and finally, walk away if I will not give up.
7
Conflict Resolution Skills
How to end a conflict through cooperation and problem solving. (Alternatives to fighting) Steps: 1. Step away from the argument 2. Let the conflict subside 3. Use interpersonal communication skills 4. Respect yourself and the other person
8
Are You Ready? Remember, if things start to get heated a fight will not solve the issues. It may cause damage to a friendship that may never be healed, and could result in physical danger as well. Learn to walk away to let your anger subside, and then use the communication skills you have learned to resolve the problem in a way that maintains your relationship in a positive, safe way.
9
Lesson 2: Making Responsible Decisions and Setting Goals
Decision making skills help you make successful and responsible choices Decisions reflect your VALUES (ideas, beliefs, attitudes about what is important and help guide the way you live)
10
Lesson 2: Making Responsible Decisions and Setting Goals

Ethical- does the choice reflect your values? L. Legal- does this choice violate any laws? P. Parents- Would your parents or guardians approve?
11

Decision Making Model (a series of steps that helps a person make responsible decisions) 1. State the situation (who, what, how much time) 2. List the options 3. Imagine the benefits and consequences (USE H.E.L.P.) 4. Consider your values 5. Weigh the options and decide 6. Make a decision and act on it 7. Evaluate the decision (USE H.E.L.P.)
