Experiencing Doubt! Matthew 11:1-19 Luke 7:18-35
2
Mark 9:24 "Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!”
3
Matthew 11:1-4 "Now it came to pass, when Jesus finished commanding His twelve disciples, that He departed from there to teach and to preach in their cities. 2And when John had heard in prison about the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples 3and said to Him, “Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?” 4Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things which you hear and see:
4
Matthew 11:5-8 5The blind see and the lame walk; the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear; the dead are raised up and the poor have the gospel preached to them. 6And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me.” 7As they departed, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? 8But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Indeed, those who wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses.
5
Matthew 11:9-12 9 But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet. 10 For this is he of whom it is written: ‘Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, Who will prepare Your way before You.’ 11 “Assuredly, I say to you, among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force.
6
Matthew 11:12-19 13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. 14 And if you are willing to receive it, he is Elijah who is to come.15 He who has ears to hear, let him hear! 16 “But to what shall I liken this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to their companions, 17 and saying: ‘We played the flute for you, And you did not dance; We mourned to you, And you did not lament.’ 18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look, a glutton and a winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ But wisdom is justified by her children.

What CAUSES Doubt? Three things could be found in our text:
EXPECTATIONS - vs 2 TRAILS - vs 2 WORLDLY INFLUENCE - vs 7-15
8
EXPECTATIONS The expectations based on the SRCIPTURES
Psalm 2:6, "“Yet I have set My King On My holy hill of Zion Zechariah 9:9, “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you;... Isaiah 9:6-7, "...Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, to order it and establish it with judgment and justice from that time forward, even forever.... The expectations based on the REVELATION Matthew 3:16-17, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased!"
9
TRAILS Rom 8:18, "18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us." James 1:2-4 says, "2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. 4 But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.“ 2 Cor 4:17, "7 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory,"
10
WORLDLY INFLUENCE John 15:19, "19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you."
11
How do we handle DOUBT? Three ways from our text: Talk to God
Believe God's WORD Believe His Revelation
12
Talk to God Rebecca said, "If all is well, why am I like this?
In Gen 25:22-23, the Bible says Rebecca didn't understand the struggle in her womb - "But the children struggled together within her; and she said, “If all is well, why am I like this?” So she went to inquire of the Lord.....
13
Believe God's WORD Daniel wanted to be SURE of the years for desolation of Jerusalem, TIME and SEASON in which they were, the Bible says in Daniel 9:2, that "2 in the first year of his reign I, Daniel, understood by the books the number of the years specified by the word of the Lord through Jeremiah the prophet, that He would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem." 1 Peter 1:24-25, "24 …25 But the word of the Lord endures forever.” Now this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you.“ Psalm 119:89, "Forever, O Lord, Your word is settled in heaven."
14
Believe His Revelation
How shall I know this? When Zachariah DOUBTED the revelation received from Angel Gabriel, in Luke 1:18-19, "And Zacharias said to the angel, “How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years.” 19 And the angel answered and said to him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and was sent to speak to you and bring you these glad tidings. 20 But behold, you will be mute and not able to speak until the day these things take place, because you did not believe my words which will be fulfilled in their own time.”
15
What is Jesus' WORD on DOUBT?
Apostle James in James 1:6-8 also condemned it, WHENEVER we are ASKING anything before the LORD, we should DO in FAITH without DOUBTING! "But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.“ Jesus also emphasizes the same point in Matthew 21:21, "So Jesus answered and said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but also if you say to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ it will be done."
16
Summary In a nutshell, we have identified the CAUSES of DOUBT which are: Expectation - our expectations might not be wrong but must be guided by the word of God! Trails - we are to endure hardness and go through tribulations for the sake of the kingdom of God! Worldly influence - these sensual life and pleasure are for a while! How do we handle DOUBT? Our sermon outlines the following, by: Talking to God; Believing God's Word; and Believing His Revelation! Finally, Christ WARNED us to STOP DOUBTING because it makes our WAYS unstable and ROB us from receiving answers to our PRAYERS!
17
Summary Finally, in Heb 10:35-39, "35 Therefore do not cast away your confidence, which has great reward. 36 For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise: 37 “For yet a little while, And He who is coming will come and will not tarry. 38 Now the just shall live by faith; But if anyone draws back, My soul has no pleasure in him.” 39 But we are not of those who draw back to perdition, but of those who believe to the saving of the soul."
