Year 10 Subject Selection – Studio Arts

Course Description In this unit students use the principles of composition and the elements of design to plan and create artwork in a number of different mediums. Both two and three dimensional art will be studied throughout the unit. Students study and analyze artwork and artists from the major art movements of Surrealism and Modernism. They also look at social commentary in art. Students also research artists and analyse their artwork discussing compositional, aesthetic and related social and cultural relationships.

Why Study this? Work Tasks
This course has both practical and written components. The course comprises of three units: Surrealism Modernism (Sculpture) Social Commentary We research and create art works from two of the major 20th Century Art movements: “Surrealism and “Modernism” In the third unit students will look at the work of the Australian artist, “Albert Tucker” and the British street artist, “Banksy”. Each of the 3 units contain the following disciplines: Art Review. This involves the analysis of art works and is done in class during the single sessions. Art Research. This involves research into the art and artists of the particular movement. Creating an Artwork. The production of an Artwork that fulfills certain criteria. Students can choose to work in a variety of media but an emphasis is placed on the visual diary which is used for all preliminary studies. The visual diary will be assessed on a number of dates during the semester. Drawing Exercises. Students will undertake a series of drawing exercises in class. This will include both creative and observational drawing:

Subject pathway…. Studio Arts can be continued in VCE and has strong numbers in both units 1-2 and It is also a good grounding for VCE Media as well as Graphic Communication.

Extra activities/costs?
Excursions have occurred in the past: Trips to exhibitions and workshops as well as field trips. They do not incur additional costs.
