Solving Linear Inequalities
Section 1.6: Solving Linear Inequalities
3
Linear inequality – in one variable can be written in one of the following forms where a and b are real numbers and a ≠ 0. ax + b < 0 ax + b > 0
4
A solution of an inequality in one variable is a value that, when substituted for the variable, results in a true statement. The graph of an inequality in one variable consists of all points on a number line that represent solutions.
5
Compound inequality – consists of two simple inequalities joined by “and” or “or.” To solve a linear inequality in one variable, you isolate the variable by using transformations that produce equivalent inequalities, which are inequalities that have the same solutions as the original inequality.
6
Example 1: Graph the following inequalities. x > -3 x < 0 -2 < x < 3 x < -1 or x > 1
7
Example 2: You have budgeted $66 a month to spend on yoga classes
Example 2: You have budgeted $66 a month to spend on yoga classes. Your yoga studio charges $22 per month membership fee, plus $5.50 per class. Describe the possible number of classes you can attend each month.
8
Example 3: Solve the following inequalities. 4x + 3 < 6x – 5 -10 < 3x + 5 < 8 -2x – 1 < -7 or 4x + 3 < 7
