Success Criteria Basic understanding of a healthy diet. Able to design a simple pasta salad. An understanding of what a healthy diet is and why is it important. Can design a pasta salad containing different sectors of the food plate. An understanding of a healthy diet and why is it important. Can explain how different food groups can be used in the body. Can design a pasta salad containing unusual ingredients.

Having a healthy balanced diet
What is a balanced diet? Having a diet based on starchy foods with lots of fruit and vegetables, protein rich foods such as meat, some milk and dairy, and a little bit of fat, salt and sugar. Why is it important? Gives our bodies the nutrients it needs to function. Helps us maintain a healthy body weight which means reduced risk of heart disease and diabetes.

Pasta Salad Demo Method
Ingredients 100g Pasta Shapes or potatoes 3-5 ingredients from the list Cucumber Pepper Sweetcorn Cherry tomatoes Carrot Red onion Extras Salad dressing Mayo Croutons Equipment; sauce pan, weighing scales, colander, green chopping board, vegetable knife, tin opener, mixing bowl. Method Put a sauce pan of water on the hob, turn out and wait for it to boil. Add 100g pasta shapes to the pan. Cook until soft. On a green chopping board, peel, slice/grate the chosen vegetables. Place the vegetables in a container with any meat. Drain the cooked pasta using a colander and add to the vegetables. Add any mayo or salad dressing and mix all the ingredients together.

Aprons on, hair tied back, wash hands etc. Gather your ingredients at your work station. Stand and wait for my next instructions. You have 3 minutes to do this. GO!

Recipe for success! I have not worked independently and there is more than 1 peg on my apron. I had to rush to complete my pasta salad on time. I have worked independently with only 1 peg on my apron. I have followed the recipe to make a colourful and attractive pasta salad that is well presented. I had to rush slightly to finish on time. I have worked independently and have no pegs on my apron. I have adapted the recipe to design and make a creative, colourful pasta salad. I have carefully considered the presentation of my salad. I have finished the practical on time and left my station clean and tidy.
