What is GIS? A “geographic information system” (GIS) is a computer-based tool that allows you to create, manipulate, analyze, store and display information based on its location. GIS makes it possible to integrate different kinds of geographic information, such as digital maps, aerial photographs, satellite images and global positioning system data (GPS), along with associated tabular database information (e.g., ‘attributes' or characteristics about geographic features).

Characteristics of GIS
With GIS software, you can digitally represent geographic objects with a variety of shapes and layer those shapes on top of one another to create maps and perform analysis. Ex- Polygons

Data Attribute Table Each state has a different color because of the state name.

Platforms GIS software is mainly produced through a company called Esri (based out of Redlands, CA). Software package is called ArcGIS. Software has 4 different platforms Mobile Desktop Online Server (We’ll be looking at ArcGIS Online)

Use for background content skills Rich media- maps, tables, charts, images, video, text Representational Environment helps users grasp patterns and relationships but also detail Participants will obtain resources and knowledge on how to implement map making techniques using Esri software.

How does GIS enhance STEM Learning?
GIS tools and techniques lead to understanding cross-disciplinary phenomena and solving problems rooted in academic and real-world concepts. GIS is well suited to driving problem based learning (PBL), an approach to classroom inquiry that is guided by a question, with students collecting data and making analytical conclusions. GIS problems involve both critical thinking and spatial thinking elements, motivating students as they learning important work force ready skills.
