Line By Line – Solve the mystery
The cards give clues to help you solve a mystery. Some give information, others ask questions. Solve the mystery! Which shop has the cheapest dishwasher? What is 25% of £420? VAT is 20% What is the total price at Sogra? What is the offer price at Syrruc? At Syrruc the recommended price is £420 Sogra asks for a £80 deposit The basic price at Temoc is £345 What is 20% of £345? Sogra asks for the rest in 12 instalments of £25.50 Temoc offer to pay the VAT on their machine Syrruc offers a reduction of 25% What is the offer price at Temoc? What is 12 x 25.5? Is it clear how you decided? Was there anything you didn’t need to work out? Explain how you solved the mystery. Include the order in which you used the cards. This is an exam question. What do you think the question is?

Mrs Davis is going to buy a new dishwasher. Three shops offer the model she wants. She decides she will buy the cheapest one out of these three offers. Work out which shop she should go to. Explain carefully how you came to your decision marks 420 – 105 = £315 = £414 12 x = £306 £315 is the cheapest 414 – 69 = £345 = £386 345 x 0.2 = £69 420 x 0.25 = £105 Temoc £345 plus VAT at 20% We’ll pay the VAT! Syrruc RRP of £420 25% off RRP Sogra £80 deposit 12 instalments of £25.50 These are the steps in the solution. Put them in order and explain what is happening in each step. Can you insert them into the ‘running order’ for the mystery cards?
