A percent is a ratio that compares a number to 100. If the number compared to 100 is greater that 100, the percent is greater that 100% If the number compared to 100 is less than 1 the percent is less than 1%

Example 1: Rewriting Percents Greater than 100
110% = ? 110% = 1.10 110% = 110/100 = 11/10 = 1 1/10 Convert percent to decimal Move decimal two places to the left Write decimal as a fraction Place percent over 100 Simplify the fraction

Example 2: Rewriting Percents Less Than 1
0.7% = ? 0.7% = 0.007 0.7% = 0.7/100 = 0.7/100 x 10/10 = 7/1000 Write percent as a decimal Move decimal point two places to the left Write percent as a fraction Place percent of 100 Remove decimal by multiplying numerator and denominator by 10 simplify
