Professor Robert Aymar I was reading in the review Nature that….. ….Like birds returning to rich feeding grounds, researchers from all over the world are flocking To CERN….. The cause of the mass migration is the large hadron collider (LHC)…. CERN estimates that about physicists will work on the LHC worldwide and many of them will be making their way to the lab in the coming months,… Geneva, 20 September During commissioning (without beam) of the final LHC sector (sector 34) at high current for operation at 5 TeV, an incident occurred at mid-day on Friday 19 September resulting in a large helium leak into the tunnel. Preliminary investigations indicate that the most likely cause of the problem was a faulty electrical connection between two magnets, which probably melted at high current leading to mechanical failure. CERN[1]’s strict safety regulations ensured that at no time was there any risk to people. The CERN Globe Nature 9 September 2008 Pr. R. Aymar is responsible for this migration Nicolas Alamanos

Professor Walter Henning Walter was honored for his central role in landing a 1 billion Euro accelerator facility to be built at GSI The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR), Walter Henning was awarded a Cross of Merit of the First Class of the Federal Republic of Germany by German President Horst Köhler at a ceremony on 4/10/ 2007 in Berlin. The Cross of Merit is the highest tribute Germany can pay to individuals for service to the nation. Walter Henning in June rejoin Argonne and head up the laboratory's effort to build a proposed exotic beam facility for nuclear physics research. Nicolas Alamanos

Professor Pier Oddone Pr. Pier Oddone is the director of Fermilab. In an interview given in the review Nature, Pier was saying: …It was always seemed to me that the prudent thing would be to run the Tevatron until is clearly overtaken by the LHC,…. Nature July 2008 Scientists from the CDF and DZero collaborations have for the first time excluded, with 95 percent probability, a mass for the Higgs of 170 GeV (about 170 proton masses). Professor Jean Iliopoulos Jean Iliopoulos, particle physicist - Dirac medal winner for 2007 The 2007 Dirac Medal, one of the most prestigious awards in theoretical physics and mathematics, was awarded on August 8th 2008 to two well-known physicists: Jean Iliopoulos, and Luciano Maiani. They were the first to posit the existence of the "charm quark", and this medal is a reward for their joint work on this particle. Their research was of great importance in constructing the "Standard Model" theory, and has given substance to modern elementary particle theory. What is the meaning of this special day? What are we celebrating? I would like here to quote the Japanese painter Hokusai: From around the age of six, I had the habit of sketching from life. I became an artist, and from fifty on began producing works that won some reputation, but nothing I did before the age of seventy was worthy of attention.... At one hundred, I may well have a positively divine understanding of them, while at one hundred and thirty, forty, or more I will have reached the stage where every dot and every stroke I paint will be alive..... ……. may Heaven, that grants long life, give me the chance to prove that this is no lie. You can see here two famous Hokusai paintings, which were painted when Hokusai was 89 years old. What we are celebrating here is the end of the first circle of John’s life and the beginning and continuation of the second circle of his life. I am sure that exactly as in the case of Hokusai important contributions are to come! Nicolas Alamanos
