Status: Required Status: Conditional students who did NOT meet conditions Status: Conditional students who scored < 50 on the ELM and/or < 147 on the EPT

ENGLISH: ESE 99 In-person or online 1 unit, 4 days total 3 hours a day, Mon-Thurs Includes Directed Self Placement (DSP)

Choose the section you want based on the meeting time. Pay attention to whether it’s an online course or an in-person course. Write down this “class number,” which you will use when registering for the course in your student center.

Q: What if I can’t take Early Start because I’ll be out of the country all summer or have encountered a medical emergency? A: Please contact the Developmental Studies Office at for next steps. On a case by case basis we evaluate a student’s situation and ability to take online one-unit versions….

Q: What if I miss the last chance to register? A: You will need to make an appeal to Andrew Brosnan, Developmental Studies Director. Contact him at to start the process. Depending on outcome of appeal, you may need to defer a semester. Reg opens April 18th last Math in-person 6/16, online 7/7 ||||| Last Eng 7/14—be sure to enroll and pay before 11:59 pm

Q: I had a fee waiver when I first looked, but now I don’t. What gives? A: Fee waiver is based on your Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) EFC is based on your family’s (or your) financial paperwork Sometimes the EFC is updated based on newly acquired documentation Students who can prove financial hardship may explore an appeal with Andrew Brosnan at

Q: I need to take my Early Start courses at another CSU How can I do that? A: English: Please take it through SF State. It is only four days long and has in-person and online options. Math: Please see developmentalstudies.sfsu.edu/esp It’s possible but sometimes not advantageous at some CSUs

Q: I don’t seem to have a link to Enroll in Early Start at my Student Center. A: Reason 1: You are exempt due to test scores and/or course work. Reason 2: The university doesn’t consider you a California resident for tuition purposes. This could be because: Your permanent address is not in California. Your records suggest you might be a Dreamer/AB540/Undocumented student. Contact the Registrar at One Stop (Student Services Building) to appeal residency status or the Dream Center to discuss AB540/undocumented resources.
