What is Delegating? Critical to Leadership
Effective delegation can be the key to success Be the Coach! Make sure you choose the right people to give certain tasks Don’t hoard the information/skills, train others in the organization This will help you avoid the “if I want it done right, I have do it myself” problem

5 Levels of Delegation As a leader, whenever you delegate a task, you need to make it clear what level of authority you are conferring to others. Level 1: Do exactly what you are asked to do. Level 2: Research the topic and report back. Level 3: Research the topic, outline the options, and make a recommendation. Level 4: Make a decision and then tell me what you did. Level 5: Make whatever decision you think is best.

SMARTT Delegating S - Be specific. Delegating vague or unclear assignments decrease the chance of success M - Delegated tasks must be measureable. “We need 12 volunteers” A - Activate your members. Follow up and motivate those you delegate tasks to R - Be realistic. Remember your members are students too, you must have realistic expectations

SMARTT Delegating T - Establish a clear timeline for the completion of the task. If you do not clearly communicate a deadline, it probably won’t be done when you need it. T - Be sure to recognize and thank members for their hard work.

1. Define the Task 2. Select the Individual or Team 3. Assess Ability and Training Needs 4. Explain the Reasons 5. State the Required Results 6. Consider the Resources Required 7. Agree on Deadlines 8. Support and Communicate 9. Provide Feedback on Results
