2. Background
Brenda Russell was born in Brooklyn, New York, and later moved to Hamilton, Ontario. She had a hard time adjusting, but that helped inspire her love for performing. For her first big break, she was approached by a manager of a music group and asked to be the singer. In 1969 Hair—The American Tribal Love/Rock Musical opened in Canada with Russell in the cast. After, she joined a musical group, but then left to start her own career. She married Brian Russel and they started a group together, which was heard by Elton John.

4. The Color Purple
Brenda co-wrote The Color Purple with Steven Bray and Allee Willis in The show opened in Atlanta and later on Broadway in Russell had a soulful R&B and Pop style, which is represented in the show. The Color Purple got five 2006 Outer Critics Circle Award nominations, including Outstanding Broadway Musical and Outstanding New Score. That same year, the show was nominated for eleven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Original Score Written for the Theater, and Best Leading Actress in a Musical, which she won.
