Today we are learning about… what Svalbard is like and where it is. We will also start to understand how landscapes evoke feelings. By the end of the lesson… ALL can locate Svalbard on a map (Level 3) MOST will be able to suggest locations in Svalbard to match the book extracts and describe those locations (Level 4) SOME will be able to explain why they chose a location, with reference to the book (Level 5-6)

Students Armoured polar bears roam the extreme Arctic landscape and its remoteness provides the perfect location for the prison of Lord Asriel. Lyra, the main character, crash lands in Svalbard, is captured by the armoured bears and taken to Lord Asriel's prison. The Northern Lights can be seen flickering in the sky. 4

Read the extracts from the book. On Google Earth, find locations to shoot each extract for part of a film version. Take time to think about how the landscape is described in the book. Placemark each location and write a description of the location and an explanation of why you choose this location. Make sure your names are at the end of your description. At the end of the lesson upload your placemarks to Moodle. Students 5
