2 Transitioning to University from Vocational Pathways
Students who transition to university from vocational pathways: Experience anxiety and stress in relation to moving to university learning environment; Underestimate requirements in relation to study load and balancing university/work/life commitments; Are unsure of expectations in relation to academic writing, completing assessment, and navigating the campus and online learning environment; Can feel isolated and disconnected from their peers; and Have higher ‘drop-out’ rates compared to students entering university from other pathways (Catterall & Davis, 2012; Ertl, Hayward, & Holscher, 2010; Hutchinson, Mitchell, & St John, 2011) School of Nursing & Midwifery

Students who transition to university from vocational pathways: Report that a bridging program to guide the transition to university would be beneficial Alleviate anxiety upon entering university Can feel more prepared and ready for university when academic skills and confidence are enhanced; and Can succeed academically when they develop a strong sense of resourcefulness, connectedness, capability, purpose, and identity (Ertl et al., 2010; Lizzio, 2006; Hutchinson et al., 2011) School of Nursing & Midwifery

SO, THE QUESTION IS: What is the School of Nursing & Midwifery at Griffith University doing to help students from vocational institutions transition confidently and successfully into the university learning environment? OUR ANSWER: We offer our Transition & Tertiary Preparedness (TTP) Program School of Nursing & Midwifery

5 What is the TTP Program Preparatory program for pathway entry students to assist with transition into university-level study Helps students develop appropriate expectations in relation to university-level study at the second year level and how to balance this with external commitments (e.g. work, family) Promotes engagement and connectedness with fellow students and with the School of Nursing & Midwifery Focuses on improving tertiary readiness and providing a solid foundation for academic success Enhances academic skills and confidence Embedded in the Griffith University Bachelor of Nursing (BN) program for vocational pathway students entering the BN in the 2nd year School of Nursing & Midwifery

6 2-day Pre-Semester Workshop and Orientation
Program Structure Phase 1 and 2 Combined 2-day Pre-Semester Workshop and Orientation 5th and 6th January Gold Coast campus 8:30am to 3pm each day Orientation to the Bachelor of Nursing Individual Orientation Days are conducted at each campus (Gold Coast, Logan and Nathan) Meet school and university staff, peer mentors and fellow students Receive information regarding Semester 1 courses and clinical placement Learn how to navigate course sites on our online learning environment Go on a campus tour Targets specific academic skills Deconstructing & understanding assessment tasks Undertaking library research Identifying, reading & critically evaluating scholarly literature Academic writing Proof-reading and editing Time management and study-related skills All resources and materials provided ‘Certificate of Achievement’ awarded at the completion of the program Registration required (see link) School of Nursing & Midwifery

Program Structure Phase 3 TTP Program Workshop Series Online support lectures align with assessment items Understand specific requirements of assessment tasks Assistance with preparing and completing assessment tasks Sessions include: Understanding assignment guidelines and marking criteria Library research strategies for assignments Critical evaluation of appropriate literature for semester assignment tasks Essay format and writing skills for assignments Developing academic arguments and using evidence appropriately APA 6th Edition formatting guidelines for essays and case study reports Preparing for examinations School of Nursing & Midwifery
