Running and Pass Coverage
2
Objective: to understand and apply the mechanics on dive plays, stretch plays, and Pass plays of all field officials.
3
Running Play Coverage Two types of Running Plays
Dive Plays vs. Stretch Plays (Dive plays stay within Offensive Line, Stretch plays get outside the OL.) Starting with your initial responsibility and getting your eyes in the right Zone Knowing the terminology: Front Side, Back side, Point of Attack, Second Level. Clear as many threats as possible during the play. (What is a threatening Block?) Reminder: Don’t leave a threat until the threat is over. Rocking Chair Mentality? Deep Guys Wake Up!
4
Pass Play Coverage Identify the play as a pass Know your keys
Man, Zone, Ball Don’t get locked in on your key. When the ball is thrown allow yourself to help out. R’s know how your passer gets hit. As soon as you feel the threat you watch the passer R’s and U’s clear those blocks. Don’t get locked on one block.
5
Position Mechanics Pre-Snap Routine (Team Tendencies)
Keys, Formations, etc. Clear the snap and quickly identify the type of play Work the zone and threats for the type of play from your position Dead ball officiation Repeat 200 times Individual Positions – R – Front Side, U- Back Side, LOS – Outside iN, Deeps - 2nd Level

What is the goal for each and every single play when it comes to crew coverage?
Efficiency Each official needs to feel as if they don’t have to officiate in someone else’s pond. AKA over officiating. We have all been in the play where a player ends up on the ground and we have no idea how. The best feeling is when you can ask your teammate and he or she saw the action. Identifying the play quickly Seeing the “threat” or the block that potentially springs the play for a big gain or the interaction of players around the play/Point of Attack Clear blocks and move on to the next threat Is it ok to overlap on blocks?
7
How do I get better at Identifying Play types?
After the play ask your teammate Did you see that action? The more you ask, the more your crew knows and eventually everyone is on the same page Big vision vs. Narrow Vision Use Hudl to work the plays from your position and then start it over and work it from another angle Look at Hudl Plays Quantity – More you see the better Don’t worry about fouls. You just want to see the blocks and clear the blocks Know down and distances during your pre- snap routine Self-talk “that’s clean”
8
Ultimate Goal: Knowing at the end of the play that you saw 3 clean blocks and being able to tell coach, who thought it was a hold, that those blocks you are talking about were clean because…..you fill in the blank!
