8 Why do we have 2 sets of figures?
What makes an event high profile? Who makes it high profile?

9 Answers The Media (hype and exposure)
Sponsors with promotions and logos on their products, adverts. Heritage of the event (how famous). Popularity Command large audiences Financial backing Can be positive or negative (Drugs, Corruption, Security issues, over commercialism, boycotts)

10 Quiz Time H/W make questions on the topic. (Cranium)
Must make two questions form each of the following games: Pictionary (drawing the clue) Moulding from plastacene Hum the theme tune from a chosen high profile event. Or play the part of a famous sports personality from your named high profile event. Data head (some facts that they have to guess true or false from)

11 Olympic Games Aim: Understand the issues relating to The Games + the advantages and disadvantages of hosting them. Can you name all 35 Olympic sports that will take place in London 2012 (Athletics covers all track and field) How many of these do we cover at school.

12 History of the Olympics
Probably the highest profile sporting event. Takes place every 4 years. Started 776BC in Olympia, Greece. Motto “Higher stronger faster” The IOC (International Olympic Committee) people in charge, was founded in 1894.

13 Recent Games and controversy associated with them
Pick two of the games dating back from 1936 in Berlin and outline the main political issues relating to it. Make note of key terms P.120 Discussion: Based on what you have read of the more recent Games (China) what will be the political issues associated with it?

14 Beijing The Beijing Olympics have come to a close after 16 days of thrilling competition - with the home nation sat on top of the gold medal table (51 Golds). China has spent seven years planning for this event. It must be relieved that these Olympics are being hailed as both a sporting and an operational success. Worries about air pollution, protesters and media freedom were eventually overshadowed by what went on in the sporting arenas. At the closing ceremony the International Olympic Committee President, Jacques Rogge, said they had been "truly exceptional games". Worries and protests about human rights and Tibet did not really figure

Discussion: Do you think the Olympics has got too big. Should events that have their own World Championships be involved. Kerboodle test H/W Look up about the London Olympics and make a note of the advantages and disadvantages of hosting the games for us. Imagine you are trying to convince the IOC (me) that London should hold the Games and another county to persuade me that they should not.. You will present these next lesson. Websites see sheet.
