The International System of Units
(The Metric System)
2
Measuring with Scientific Units
An important part of some scientific investigations is making accurate measurements. The United States is the only country that does not use the metric system! The rest of the globe uses the Metric System So, to ensure our scientist's work is accurately understood by everyone, scientists only use the Metric System
3
Brain Storm Name some things you use everyday that are measured:
4
Think About It... Ingredients in your hamburger, hot dog, potato chips, soda, cafe latte and even iced mochachino are measured! Even the water you drink and electricity you use are measured! All of these labels list the measured quantities in metric units
5
Intro to the Metric System
The basic unit of Length in the metric system in the meter. The meter is represented by a lowercase m. The meter can be broken down into smaller units… All are factors of 10
6
Understanding the Metric System
7
Converting Using the phrase K H D U D C M
“King Henry Died Unusually Drinking Chocolate Milk” Will help you figure out conversions of metric units K H D U D C M All you need to do is MOVE THE DECIMAL!
8
Converting The “U” stands for your basic Unit (gram, liter, meter)...
To convert from one unit to another... count the letters forward or backward to get to the correct unit... K H D U D C M How ever many letters you move... THAT'S HOW MANY PLACES YOU NEED TO MOVE THE DECIMAL!
9
Common Measurements Measurement Base Unit Symbol Length Meter m
Millimeter mm Centimeter cm Kilometer km Volume Liter l Milliliter ml Mass Gram g Milligram mg Kilogram kg
10
Remember the Larger Number means it's a smaller unit!
Which is a larger unit? Kilometers per hour or Miles per hour?
11
Measuring Length How many millimeters are in 1 centimeter?
1 centimeter = 10 millimeters How many millimeters are in 1 centimeter? What is the length of the line in centimeters? _______cm What is the length of the line in millimeters? _______mm What is the length of the line to the nearest centimeter? ________cm HINT: Round to the nearest centimeter – no decimals. Ruler:

Intro to the Metric System
The basic unit of Mass in the metric system in the gram. Mass is not the same as Weight! Would you weigh the same on the moon? Why/Why not? The gram is represented by a lowercase g. The gram can be broken down into smaller units… All are factors of 10
13
Intro to the Metric System
The basic unit of Volume in the metric system in the liter. Volume is the amount of space an object occupies The liter is represented by a uppercase L. The liter can be broken down into smaller units… All are factors of 10
14
But, what if I can't accurately measure the object?
You can obtain the Volume of an irregularly shaped object by using WATER! The amount of water “displaced” in a graduated cylinder after an object is added is the volume of that object This is called WATER DISPLACEMENT
15
Water Displacement How much water was “displaced”?
First... do you know how to read a graduated cylinder??? From the bottom of the MENISCUS
16
Just so you know... Milliliters are equivalent to cm3
The units for DENSITY are g/cm3 Density is equal to Mass / Volume... So, g/cm3! Cover the one you are trying to find!
19
Using Length to Find Other Info
How can we use length to find out other info about an object? Do you know how to find out an object's area if you only have a meter stick? Length x Width Do you know how to find out an object's volume if you only have a meter stick? Length x Width x Height
