Intro to the Metric System
FORGET ABOUT THE UNITS OF MEASUREMENT THAT YOU ARE USED TO!!!
2

How many minutes are there in a day?
Drill How many minutes are there in a day?
4
How do I convert in chemistry?
Essential Question How do I convert in chemistry?
5
Remember: Units have to cancel diagonally
The top and bottom in a square are equivalent You must end in the units that you want MAKE SURE TO WRITE YOUR UNITS IN EVERY SQUARE AND IN YOUR ANSWER!!!!!!!!
6
A cheetah has been clocked at 71 miles per hour
A cheetah has been clocked at 71 miles per hour. How fast is this in centimeters per minute? 1 mi = 5280ft in = 2.54cm
7
There are only 2 things you need to know to use the metric system:
Metric = Simple There are only 2 things you need to know to use the metric system: A set of prefixes Base units of measurement for distance, weight, volume, and temperature.
8
Distance “Meters” are the standard unit of measurement for distance.
Michael Jordan is about 2 meters tall…. and can jump over 1 meter in the air! The average male in the U.S. is 1.77 Meters Tall The average female in the U.S. is 1.64 Meters Tall
9
“Grams” are the standard unit of measurement for weight.
A new-born baby usually weighs between 2, grams.
10
A 2-Liter soda bottle is our most common use “liters.”
Volume “Liters” are the standard metric unit for volume (remember the formula for volume?) A 2-Liter soda bottle is our most common use “liters.”
11
There are a few basic prefixes that will help us greatly:
Kilo = or 1 x 103 Hecto = 100 or 1 x 102 Deca = 10 or 1 x 101 Deci = 1/10 or 1 x 10-1 Centi = 1/100 or 1 x 10-2 Milli = 1/1000 or 1 x 10-3
12
More Prefixes… Mega = 1,000,000 or 1 x 106
Giga = 1,000,000,000 or 1 x 109 Micro = 1/1,000,000 or 1 x 10-6 Nano = 1/1,000,000,000 or 1 x 10-9 Where have you heard “nano” before?
13
Why prefixes? Weight: Kilograms, grams, milligrams Distance:
Standard metric units (grams, meters, liters) are not always the most convenient. In chemistry, we will frequently use the following units of measurement: Weight: Kilograms, grams, milligrams Distance: Kilometers, meters, centimeters, millimeters, nanometers Volume: Liters, milliliters
14
Other convenient conversions
1 cm3 = 1mL 1 m3 = 1000L
15
HW If you are unsure of how to convert to scientific notation (or want a refresher), you need to watch the video and complete the note sheet If you do know how to convert, you DO NOT need to watch the video
