1 Destructive Testing The mechanical testing of weld samples to determine their strength and other characteristics. Performed on test specimens taken from welded plate that duplicates the material and the weld procedures used on the job. Widely used for welder and procedure qualification test procedures developed by the American Welding Society that are the standard for industry.

2 Advantages Destructive testing is used to test the soundness of a given weld and the skill of the person who created the weld cost effective less and cheaper equipment requirements reliable results

3 Types of Destructive Testing
Tensile Strength test involves intentionally reducing the cross section of a weld coupon and applying a pulling load until the weld/coupon fails.

4 Side Bend involves bending a weld coupon at a right angle in relation to the direction in which the weld was performed.

5 Guided Root Bend bending a weld coupon over a radius of a specific size, or guide, for the purpose of testing the soundness of the bottom or first weld pass

6 Guided Face Bend bending a weld coupon over a radius of a specific size, or guide, for the purpose of testing the soundness of the top or last weld pass or passes.

7 Welding Code Welding codes exist for:
standardized welding functions within a given industry. providing a set of rules or regulations for a given area (example: structural steel) of welding. providing a point of reference for all entities working in a given industry.

8 AWS Coding Requirements
Maximum allowed width for SMAW welds (except weave beads)... 3 times the electrode diameter Maximum height of reinforcement or bead height for SMAW welds... 1/8 of an inch Number of layers (not passes) to correctly fill an AWS groove weld on 3/8 inch plate with a backing bar... three Maximum allowed width for the root opening used for the AWS groove weld with backing bar... 1/4 of an inch

9 Correct included angle for the AWS groove weld with backing bar…
45 degrees Fillet welds that have equal leg length, regardless if the contour of the weld face is concave or convex… will have a face angle of 45 degrees

10 Organizations American Welding Society
created the welding code for structural steel, bridges and aircraft. AWS D1.1 Code Structural Welding Code AWS D1.5 Code Bridges AWS D17.1 Code fusion welding for aerospace applications AWS D18.1 Code welding austenitic stainless-steel tube and pipe systems in sanitary (hygienic) supplications

11 American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)
Code for boilers and pressure vessels, Section IX the welding of piping connecting to boilers and pressure vessels

12 American Petroleum Institute (API)
the standard for welding pipelines and related facilities (API Standard 1104) the welding of pipelines using compression, pumping, and transmission of crude petroleum, petroleum products, fuel and gases, and certain distribution systems

13 American Waterworks Association
issued standards covering the fabrication of piping for water purification plants

14 Your Destructive test Use 7108 electrodes from oven
DO NOT manipulate 7018 electrodes! Evaluated by AWS Welding Code D1.1 Practice before final destructive test… You must pass this weld along with maintaining at least an 85% average for the entire course!
