2 Stainless Steel Stainless steel also known as Corrosion Resistance or Chromium Bearing steel. 12% Cr which forms Chromium oxide protective layer  barrier to rust and corrosion. FERROUS AND NON FERROUS ALLOYS

3 Types of Stainless Steel

4 Austenitic SS It has austenitic Microstructure retained at room temperature. When Ni is present, the tendency of Ni to lower the critical temperature and override the effect of Cr. Thus it becomes completely Austentitic. FERROUS AND NON FERROUS ALLOYS

5 0.15% C is only allowed to avoid formation of Carbides.
If they are slowly cooled (or) if they are heated at a range of 500 – 700 deg C, Carbide forms and this types of Corrosion is called Weld Decay. To prevent it we use stabilizers like Nb or Ti. High strength, hardness, wear and corrosion resistance can be achieved by dispersion of fine TiC etc. FERROUS AND NON FERROUS ALLOYS

6 Composition C – 0.03 to 0.15% Si – 1 to 2% Ni – 3.5 to 22%
Mn – 2 to 10% Cr – 16 to 26% P and S – 0.002% Ferrous – remaining. Mo and Ti is added at some cases. FERROUS AND NON FERROUS ALLOYS

8 Ferritic SS Ferritic Microstructure al through
Cr – 12 to 25% and <0.1% C. It is strengthened only by Work Hardening. FERROUS AND NON FERROUS ALLOYS

12 Martenistic SS Cr – 12 to 25% C - 0.1 to 1.5%
The Presence of carbon restores the alpha to austenite Transformation. The Composition can be heated to the austenitic range of temp and will transform to martensite on cooling FERROUS AND NON FERROUS ALLOYS

23 Maraging Steel High alloyed and low carbon steels.
