2
Warm up Name the 4 glands of the endocrine system?
Why are glands important to the endocrine system?
3
Endocrine Glands Two systems responsible for communication of messages to the brain: Nervous System Endocrine System- Chemical communication system using hormones, with messages sent through the bloodstream.
4
Endocrine Glands Communication done through chemical messages carried through the bloodstream called hormones. Although the hormones travel in the bloodstream, they are properly received in a specific location.
5
Endocrine Glands Ductless glands: the release is directly into the blood. Duct glands: the release is not directly into the bloodstream. Etc. sweat glands, tear glands, and salivary glands.
6
Pituitary Gland: Pituitary Gland- the center of control in the endocrine system that secrets a large number of hormones “Master Gland” Near midbrain and hypothalamus Carries messages to organs
7
Thyroid Gland Thyroid Gland- produces hormone called thyroxine.
Thyroxine stimulates chemical reactions important for body reactions Hydrothyroidism- to little makes people lazy Hyperthyroidism- to much makes people hyper active
8
Adrenal Glands Adrenal Glands- become active when angry or frightened
Releases epinephrine and norepinephrine (aka; adrenal and noradrenalin) Causes increase in heartbeat and breathing Heighten emotions of fear and anxiety Secrete Cortical steroids help muscles develop & release sugar for energy.
9
Sex Glands (2 types) Testes: Produce sperm and testosterone Ovaries: make estrogen and progesterone, produce eggs. Testosterone important in prenatal period for males to develop as a fetus. Adolescence important for muscles, bones, male sex characteristics. Estrogen & Progesterone important for female characteristics, Regulate reproductive cycle. PMS, symptoms of fatigue, irritability & depression.
10
Discussion Questions Could some kind of physical activity increase the hormones in our baby? Without adrenal glands how would people get out of difficult situations? Why do you think people search for an adrenaline rush?
