Nativism grew as a response to the growing number of immigrants because of differences in religion, language, and culture, and because of competition for jobs.
1880s
The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882
reflected anti-immigrant sentiment in California

restricted immigration from southern and eastern Europe
favored immigration from northern and western Europe

African Americans migrated north to escape the systematic discrimination of the rural South beginning during WWI and continuing throughout WWII.

Reasons to immigrate:
They could take advantage of the better job opportunities the U.S. offers.
They could reunite with family members who had previously immigrated to the United States.
Mexicans immigrated to the U.S. to escape their crowded homeland.
